CLEARWATER, FLA.

You can reach Clearwater any way you choose. Many vis- itors from all corners of the country come by automobile over the high-roads, and we have made the going easy by building solid brick roads from North to South and criss-crossing the en- tire Pinellas County, of which Clearwater is the County Seat. This local system of roads connects to the north and east with those of other counties and States.

Others make the trip by water via Tampa, about one hour distant by "Bus." If you decide to go by rail, the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line run direct trains to our city daily.

Excursion tickets for round trips are sold at reduced prices, but we feel it our duty to caution you against buying such trans- portation, as a great number of travelers, to our certain knowl- edge, have never used the return ticket.

If you have not been to Florida before, and especially if you are coming from a big city, it will fill you with delight to get ac- quainted with the inhabitants of our State. This is written without a thought of depreciation of our countrymen from the North. But the fact that the struggle for existance has lost its sting in this Paradise on Earth, naturally gives us all a cheerful disposition, and a man who is literally walking in sunshine all his life cannot be gloomy.

Scenery And Climate

Clearwater's topographical merits are without question unique in the State of Florida.

The site where the town is now situated was the camping grounds of the Seminole Indians in earlier days and was chosen 100 years ago by the U. S. forces for the erection of their fort (later named Fort Harrison) owing to its healthful and strate- gical position.

The low coast line of Florida is here transformed into a bluff of rare beauty, giving to Clearwater the greatest elevation of any coast city of Florida.

Clearwater is the natural sequence to these old historical facts, and this bold headline overlooking the Gulf of Mexico,

II

12

which is our inheritance today, was peopled by the first white settlers owing to its distinct features of healthfulness, fertility and beauty during all seasons of the year. And what was true then still holds good with the future emphasis of modern saniti- . tion, deeper knowledge of the conditions of the soil and with the building of up-to-date attractive homes.

Nowhere on the American mainland is the temperature, summer and winter more pleasant and invigorating. In summer the thermometer seldom registers 90 degrees or more, but aver- ages in the region of 82; a drop of 32 degrees in winter is a rare event, indeed, as the average for day and night in mid- winter is about 62. On account of location and elevation, un- like that of many other coast cities, the atmosphere is remark- ably free from moisture and fogs throughout the winter season The warmest days of summer here in Clearwater are tempered by the breezes from the Gulf and never does the atmosphere become suffocating. The coldest days of winter, on the other hand, are not raw and disagreeable but snappy and rather en- joyable.

Streets And Avenues

Clearwater is a city of many streets and of considerable space. The reason of this is the fact that nearly all homes are surrounded by spacious grounds or by remnants of orange groves, memories of a past when Florida was not yet invaded by the railroads, or discovered by the Winter Tourist.

It is a most striking contrast that meets your eye when you turn from the business streets of the town to the residential sections. While the former present an uninterrupted scene of busy pedestrians crowding the sidewalks and automobiles en masse by the curbs or gliding over the asphalt, the latter are smothered in foliage and flowers. Most impressive are the magnifiecnt, gnarled old oaks covered with Spanish moss and the stately palms with fern-like heads, and on every turn you are confronted with a burst of color, ever changing and wonder- ful to behold.

Buildings

Our two banks, The Bank of Clearwater and People's Bank, have enjoyed prosperity and are doing business running into seven figures. Their bank buildings are very fine and imposing structures attesting the financial strength of our community. Another beautiful edifice is the new Clearwater Library with its well appointed reading room and large and varied collection of books.

13

With a full understanding of the importance of educational institutions, the public schools conform to modern demands and are under the supervision of able men who know how to select the right kind of teachers for every grade, from the day the child enters school till he graduates from high school.

The Morton F. Plant Endowed Hospital, erected by the cit- izens of Clearwater and endowed by Mr. Plant, stands just at the edge of the town. The sense of security that lies in the knowledge of having a throughly equipped hospital at our very door is well worthy of consideration. Clearwater in this re- spect is also very fortunate in having a fine corps of resident physicians with extensive experience at home and abroad.

Sport And Recreation

The Pinellas County Court House, a handsome structure of modern architecture, is located in the center of the city, the County Seat of "Peerless. Pinellas."

Half a mile to the south of Clearwater is a famous hotel, Club House, Casino, Swimming Pool and the Belleair Golf Links, always kept in first-class shape. A picture of absorbing inter- est is here presented when the players are scattered in groups over the links on these two courses, among whom are many men and women of nation-wide reputation.

If you are a golfer, Clearwater should claim you as a regular visitor every winter, as you here find the conditions for the great sport almost beyond improvement. The links, the bright, sunny days, the genial players-everything is just right.

Between the main-land and the Mexican Gulf are the Florida Keys; long narrow islands with their picturesque palm silhou- etted against the sky.

Clearwater Bridge, two miles long, connects the city with its Key, and a. "Bus" line operates continually for your convenience if you have no conveyance of your own and do not care for the brisk little walk. Here, on the Key to the open Gulf, are the bathing beaches with ample pavilions and bath houses.

Fishing is a great pastime with us in idle hours, both in the outside Gulf and in the calm inshore waters. And the fact that we have also a number of streams and inland lakes makes the sport still more fascinating as the variety of fish is correspond- ingly great.

Citrus Fruit and Vegetables

The orange and the grapefruit, Florida's old staple crop, is still the principal industry of Pinellas County. From the Clearwater zone is shipped annually over a half million boxes of

14

citrus fruit, and the revenue derived from this source is reflected in the wealth of the community. There are thousands of acres of fine citrus land yet to be developed. The demand is growing daily, and if you are interested in the business of fruit growing at all, you would do well to investigate its untold possibilities now.

For the man of agricultural ability or inclination, good farm land is also still available close at hand, and a great variety of vegetables can be successfully grown.

Clearwater has now over 4,000 inhabitants, and as the im- mense stream of tourists is ever increasing, a ready market for all farm products is found close at hand.

Also in the city we are in need of more new enterprising cit- izens to help us take care of the throngs of visitors in the sea- son that generally opens in November and lasts till May.

Opportunities

Money invested in a hotel and in cottages for rent is sure. to yield a comfortable income, as our accommodations at pres- ent are overtaxed; and considering the rapid growth of our town, there is in fact, a good opening for almost any kind of a sound industry.

Whether you aim to live in town or in the country, you will find here the conveniences to which you have been accustomed elsewhere, while our wonderful climate simply precludes the faintest possibility of hardships.

Cost of Living

Compared to other cities in the country, Clearwater is not an expensive place in which to live, and in many respects you will find the cost of living lower than elsewhere. The yearly saving on clothing and fuel, as against these burdens farther north and west, is a very important item, and while we can not claim this advantage for Clearwater in particular over our sis- ter cities in Southern Florida, we do claim to have a particu- larly high and dry atmosphere with no penetrating fogs.

Stores chủ

Our stores in all branches are ably managed and stocked to satisfy and suit any pocketbook. , Clearwater's nearness to big markets, by rail or by water, is the ever-present factor that is placing our imports and exports, alike, on a very favorable foot- ing.

Newspapers

The Clearwater Evening Sun (daily) and The Clearwater News are the names of our local papers, and it would probably be a wise move on your part, if you are interested in our invi- tation to come to Clearwater, to order one of these papers for a short period and thus get familiar with the local happenings from day to day.

Fraternal Organizations and Churches

If you are a member of any of the prominent fraternal or- ganizations, and they are almost all represented here, the Clear- water headquarters would no doubt endorse our claims as would also the churches. They would undoubtedly testify to the high moral plane of our community.

The churches include the Baptist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist Episcopal, Christian Science and Christian.

So much has been said about our beautiful sunny days, cli- maxed by the gorgeous sunsets, that it would not be amiss to mention the nights, when the thrill of the mocking-bird's song has been stilled, always wonderful and refreshing and simply beyond description.

For further information please write the Secretary of the Board of Trade, who will take great pains to furnish you with the exact details you may want.

Your letter will be very much appreciated and receive prompt attention.

PREFACE

The publishers herewith present the first edition of the Clearwater City Directory with the assurance that neither time, labor nor expense has been spared to produce a work which in every respect will completely fill the re- quirements of a growing city. The canvass of the territory embraced has been complete and thorough and has not been confined to the corporate limits but has been extended to include the outlying portions of the city, the inhabitants of which afe so closely identified with the life of the community as to make their inclusion in the City Directory a necessity.

The arrangement of this volume is similar to the directories of the other and larger cities of the State, and all the features of a modern and complete guide to the city will be found within its covers.

The department of Miscellaneous Information beginning at page 25, is a complete and comprehensive guide to the State, County and City governments, Churches, Public and Private Schools, Banks, Courts, Hospitals and Asylums, Clubs, Benevolent, Literary and other associations, Secret Societies, etc. This is followed by the Street Directory or Householders' Guide, pages 37 to 50, which consists of the name and description of each street and avenue in al- phabetical order, the numbers on each street also being shown together with the name of the occupant of each buliding and at what number the intersect- ing streets cross. By use of this department the exact location of any house or building in the city can be immediately and exactly ascertained.

The Alphabetical List of Names commencing at page 51 contains the names of all business firms and corporations, and the inhabitants of the city over a certain age, together with the occupation and address of each individ- ual. Following this will be found directories of Belleair, Dunedin, Largo, Ozona, Safety Harbor and Sutherland.

The Classified Business Directory, the concluding department, is a com- plete exhibit of the commercial, manufacturing, professional, financial and other business interests of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under their respective headings.

There are contained in this volume 1,446 names, by use of the multiple of 21/2 to allow for the names of women and children, a population of 3,615 is indicated for Clearwater and its environs.

The publishers desire to extend their thanks to the subscribers to the work for their support, and to the public in general for their co-operation in furnishing the necessary information to the enumerators and to assure the public that we will endeavor to make each succeeding volume more worthy of their commendation and patronage.

Respectfully, R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
