PENSACOLA, FLORIDA,
PENSACOLA.
THIS city is situated in the western part of the State, and in the southwestern part of Escambia County, of which it is the county seat, and on the north side of Pensacola Bay, within ten miles of the outer buoy in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which marks the entrance to the harbor. The channel at the entrance to the port has the depth of twenty-five feet, and ocean vessels can be brought alongside of and within ten feet of the cars, thus enabling this port to zuccessful compete with all others for both foreign and domestic trade.
DISTANCES.
Pensacola is 246 miles from New Orleans, 371 from Jacksonville, 203 from Tallahassee, the capital of the State, 420 from Savanah, Ga., 165 from Montgomery, Ala., 105 from Mobile, Ala., 653 from Louisville, Ky., 763 from Cincinnati, 740 from St. Louis, 970 from Chi- cago, 1222 from New York, 994 from Washington, D. C., and 1439 from Boston.
POPULATION.
The population is found, by a popular method of com- putation to be, 15,344. An increase of more than a thousand over the last issue.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
It is safe to say that the public schools of Pensacola rank with the best in the south, and the children of the first families, as well as of all classes of the population, attend. It would be difficult to find a city where more interest and pride is shown in the cause of education than in Pensacola.
CLUBS.
The Osceola and Florida Clubs are among the finest the south.
LUMBER AND FISH.
Lumber is the great export commodity .... ing directly and indirectly interested ir business.
8
WEBB'S PENSACOLA DIRECTORY. '
Pensacola is one of the great fish markets of the coun- try, and supplies largely the west and northwest with this food commodity.
RAILROADS.
The Louisville and Nashville Railroad in Florida runs- from Pensacola north to Flomaton, or Pensacola Junc- tion, 44 miles, where it connects for the North, East and West. The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad which is owned by the above-named road runs from Pensacola east to River Junction near Chattahoochee, 161 miles, where it connects for the East and North via the Florida Central & Peninsular Railway, and the Savannah, Flor- ida and Western Railway.
The Pensacola and Perdido Railroad runs from Pensa- cola to Millview on Perdido Bay, ten miles, and is used largely in the transportation of lumber, although regu- lar passenger train are run.
SHIPPING.
Its spacious and land-locked harbor shelters 600 vessels annually, whose cargóes are distributed over all parts of Great Britain and the Continent, Mediterranean, South America, etc., etc., and the largest draft vessels can safely cross the bar at the entrance of the harbor.
CLIMATE.
The balmy breezes from the Gulf make the tempera- ture moderate in summer and winter, and the thermome- ter seldom reaches 92 degrees. Sergeant WcGauran, U. S. S. C., from thermometrical observations at this office, in Pensacola, gave the following table of mean tempera- ture during the year he was in charge:

Pensacola's baths, boating and fishing are rapidly increasing its popularity as a summer resort. Winter and summer its healthfulness is marvelous. Winter visi- tors luxuriate in a soft, salubrious atmosphere, with health in every breath. All classes of chronic diseases, such as diarrhœa, dysentery, rheumatism, diseases of the kidneys, and incipient pulmonary cases, are benefitted and relieved by a visit to Pensacola.

WEBB'S PENSACOLA DIRECTORY.
HUNTING, FISHING AND YACHTING.
There are pleasure yachts and steamers, which make daily excursions to the U. S. Navy Yard, Forts Barran- cas and Pickens, and the Life Saving Station. There is also good hunting, fishing and yachting to be had at all seasons of the year, Pensacola Bay being about 30 miles long, by an average width of 3 or 4 miles, and entirely land-locked, making it one of the best and safest sheets of water for yachting purposes anywhere.
Pensacola needs some energetic wholesale merchants, and industrious " live" men, with small capital, to start manufacturing enterprises which would pay well, among which may be mentioned a tannery, stave factory, woodware, glass factory, shoes, cigars and tobacco. The materials for such enterprises, as well as for a paper mill, iron works, moss factory, canning works (the best fish and oysters in in the world being had here), fertilizer factory, naval stores, a steel plant to utilize the ore which can easily be brought by vessels which now bring ballast, and all kinds of wood-working products, are at hand or easily obtained, and the climate is unexceptionable, water soft, abundant and cheap. fuel plenty and com- mon labor can be had readily to fill all demands.
NEWSPAPERS.
There is one daily, receiving the associated press dis- patches, and two weekly newspapers.
HOTELS.
The new Continental Hotel is the pride of the people, and does much in extending the reputation of Pensacola as a winter resort. The City Hotel, the National and the Merchants' Hotel have a good reputation with the traveling public. The City Hotel and the National Hotel are situated on East Government street, near the Opera House and the Banks.

Pensacola is numbered after the style generally known as the " Philadelphia plan," allowing 100 numbers to a block. The streets are divided into East and West and North and South ; Palafox being the division for East and West; and Garden for North and South. Following are the streets running East and West, with Palafox as the division : Belmont, Brainerd, Cervantes, Chase, De Soto, Gadsden, Garden, Gonzalez, Government, Gregory, Intendencia, Jackson, La Rua, Lloyd, Main, Romana, Strong, Wright, Zarragossa.
