MANASOTA LAND & TIMBER CO. Sarasota, Fla

Palmetto, Florida
PREFACE
1
Palmetto is a prosperous city of 2,700 inhabitants, lo- cated on the north bank of the beautiful Manatee River, which at this point is over a mile in width. Its people are progressive and believe that the best is none too good for their homes. Hence they have provided liberally all the con- veniences of the modern city. Many miles of brick-paved streets and concrete sidewalks, electric lights for streets and houses, municipal water works and a complete sewer system are some of the features that add to the comforts of urban life here.
A wide-awake Board of Trade, a live Woman's Club, and a progressive newspaper are putting Palmetto more and more on the map.
Several churches, a modern high and graded school and a well equipped public library contribute to the spiritual and intellectual welfare of the community.
Palmetto has three factories worthy of mention. A cigar factory, where the well-known "Palmetto Straights" are made; an ice factory, with a daily capacity of 80 tons ; and the Palmetto Novelty Works, which is conceded by lumber men to be the best equipped plant for its size in the state. There is nothing made of wood that cannot be turned out of this factory.
Palmetto's prosperity rests mainly on the agricultural wealth that abounds in the fertile fields which stretch back for miles from the banks of the Manatee. Two of the larg- est grape-fruit and orange groves in the world lie just out- side the city, and numerous small groves of from five to twenty acres are found in all directions. Thousands of acres are planted annually in tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, celery and other vegetables that tempt the Northern appetite, while the wintry blasts are blowing. The products from these fertile fields make Palmetto the greatest shipping point in South Florida. Hundreds of car loads of fruit and vegetables leave this point annually, and the returns furnish the sinews that establish the permanence of Palmetto's prosperity.
Hundreds of acres of yet uncleared lands near here still await the sturdy settler who wishes to locate his home close to nature. Palmetto welcomes you !
