Palmetto, Florida

PREFACE

Palmetto is a prosperous city of 2,700 inhabitants, located on the north bank of the beautiful Manatee River, which at this point is over a mile in width. Its people are progressive and believe that the best is none too good for their homes. Hence they have pro- vided liberally all the conveniences of the modern city. Many miles of brick-paved streets and concrete sidewalks, electric lights for streets and houses, municipal water works and a complete sewer system are some of the features that add to the comforts of urban life here.

A wide-awake Chamber of Commerce, a live Woman's Club, and a progressive newspaper are putting Palmetto more and more on the map.

Several churches, two modern high school buildings and a well- equipped public library contribute to the spiritual and intellectual welfare of the community.

Palmetto's prosperity rests mainly on the agricultural wealth that abounds in the fertile fields which stretch back for miles from the banks of the Manatee. Two of the largest grape-fruit and orange groves in the world lie just outside the city, and numerous small groves of from five to twenty acres are found in all direc- tions. Thousands of acres are planted annually in tomatoes, let- tuce, peppers, celery and other vegetables that tempt the Northern appetite, while the wintry blasts are blowing. The products from these fertile fields make Palmetto the greatest shipping point in South Florida. Hundreds of carloads of fruit and vegetables leave this point annually, and the returns furnish the sinews that estab- lish the permanence of Palmetto's prosperity. In 1922-23 over 5,000 cars of vegetables were shipped.

Hundreds of acres of yet uncleared lands near here still await the sturdy settler who wishes to locate his home close to nature. Palmetto welcomes you!
