Dr. Barth's Sanatorium, Hotel and Baths

The oldest institution in Safety Harbor, operating for 21 consecutive years, Dr. Barth's Sanatorium, Hotel & Baths is located in a 51/2-acre grove of spreading oaks and ced- ars on the western shore of Old Tampa Bay. This institu- tion is designed, equipped and operated as a spa, excluding infectious and malignant cases, as well as conditions re- quiring hospitalization.

Progressively-constructive regimens are employed amid these peaceful surroundings as a great aid to convalescence and post-operative cases. Dr. Barth is experienced in cases such as come to spas, utilizing hydro-therapy, physio-ther- apy, dietetics and exercise where needed.

The electrical department is completely equipped with short wave, sine wave and diatheramy, facilitating all the late procedures of this character.

Dr. Barth's Sanatorium, Hotel & Baths is part of a whole unit under one roof, and is operated under the per- sonal direction of Dr. Con F. Barth, who offers an exper- ience of over thiry years in this field, including 21 years at Safety Harbor. He is licensed and employs only licensed attendants in all departments. A consultation obligates one in no way, frank and honest opinions being given. Nurses are provided when necessary. Medical collaboration is called when wanted only, and charges are fixed by at- tending physician. Baths or treatment of whatever char- acter are permitted only after an examination; thereafter reactions are checked and the case further studied. There is no charge for doctor's examination, consultation or service.

Corrective results have and always will be this institu- tion's primary objective, whether obtained here or through the institution's reference to such reliable authorities as may be indicated. It does not offer a cure-all, and recog- nizes all legitimate and proven methods of practice. Min- eral waters, diuretic and mildly laxative in character, are advocated and prescribed as indicated for a great variety of ailments, while the waters of the Barth Mineral Wells are used in the bathing rooms and the sanatorium. One of these waters, the 3-Bs, is a splendid laxative and liver stimulant and is used for this purpose only.

Dr. Barth's Sanatorium, Hotel & Baths is nationally- recognized as Florida's foremost spa.

Tarpon Springs

You are invited to spend your next vacation in Tarpon Springs, whether it be for a few days, a week, the winter season-or better still-to make it your permanent home. In any event, you will find Tarpon Springs a delightful place in which to live.

The Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce will be de- lighted to give specific information, upon request.

Located in the northernmost part of Pinellas County, it has a high elevation, and contains twenty miles of water- frontage within its corporate limits, including picturesque bayous, reaching into the heart of the city. Adding to its beauty, among many tropical trees, shrubs and flowers, are numerous jacaranda trees, which, when in bloom, dot the city with splashes of lavender splendor. It is worth a trip to Tarpon Springs to see them!

Often referred to as "The Venice of the South" be- cause of its similarity to "Old Venice," Tarpon Springs is bounded on the north by the Anclote River, on the east by Lake Butler and on the west by the Gulf of Mexico.

CLIMATE: Climatic conditions the year 'round are un- excelled by any other section, not only of this country, but other countries of the world as well. It is pleasantly warm, with plenty of sunshine during the winter months, while in the summer there is always a cool breeze off the Gulf.

WATER: Excellent water is supplied by the city from deep wells.

INDUSTRIES: Here is located the largest sponge in- dustry in the world, with an annual income of more than $1,000,000. Other industries included in the trade territory are five citrus packing houses, a grapefruit canning plant, several shipyards and ways, a custom chicken hatchery, an ice plant, five wholesale fish companies, sixteen sponge- packing houses, a bottling works, a tannery, a snakebite kit factory, and various other small industries.

INNESS PAINTINGS: Here are located the Inness paintings, in the Church of the Good Shepherd, which is open daily from 3:00 to 5:00 o'clock, when lectures are given. These ten religious paintings were inspired by the beauties of the vicinity, and were the work of the late George Inness, Jr., whose father had already made this section famous with his painting, "The Home of the Heron." Like them, many artists and lovers of nature have been drawn here by the unusual setting of Tarpon Springs, its bayous, the tropical Anclote River, Lake Butler and the Gulf.

TRAVEL FACILITIES: Served by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad; busses of the Gulf Coast Motor Lines, Inc., and Florida Motor Lines, and excellent paved highways con- necting with all parts of Florida.

CHURCHES: Churches of practically every denomina- tion are found here, including Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Universalist, Greek Orthodox and Church of God.

SCHOOLS: Accredited elementary and junior-senior high schools, housed in modern buildings with up-to-date

equipment. A 70-piece high school band, which has on several occasions received high honors in competitive play- ing.

LIBRARY: A new public library containing thousands of volumes, among them many of the latest books.

Many beautiful homes and homesites, a municipal hos- pital, excellent accommodations of all kinds, and many forms of sports and entertainment are found here.

SPORTS: One of the finest 18-hole golf courses on the west coast of Florida is found here. Shuffleboard courts; tennis and other forms of entertainment at Coburn City Park, where there is also a boat landing, picnic grounds, fishing, both fresh and salt water, and other water sports; boat trips on river and Gulf during peace times.

Tourist activities include a tourist club with several hundred members who enjoy entertainments, card parties, needlework clubs and other activities especially arranged by various groups.

AGRICULTURE: Citrus groves dot the surrounding territory, and in the vicinity are also grown many other fruits and practically all vegetables that are found else- where in E prida. Such products are plentiful in season, and are available almost the year 'round.

Poultry is raised extensively in this vicinity.

HOTELS: Excellent hotels offering every comfort for the visitor-by the day, week or month, at moderate rates. The leading hotels include the Hotel Villa Plumosa, the Ho- tel Stratford and the Hotel Arcade, all of which will be glad to give their rates on application-European plan.

Comfortable apartments and rooms in private homes or at the smaller hotels are available-with or without meals.

TOURIST CAMPS: Excellent, registered tourist camps and trailer facilities are available for those who prefer them.

CLUBS: In Tarpon Springs are numerous civic, frater- nal and Social clubs and organizations representing all leading bodies of the country. Rotary and Lions are prom- inent here.

The Greek Epiphany ceremony, held here annually on Jan. 6, is attended by thousands of persons. The Greek Orthodox Church, centuries old, with all its beauty of sym- bolism, retains many of its ecclesiastical and church cus- toms and rites, among which is the ever-interesting Epiphany or "Greek Cross" ceremony commemorating the baptism of Christ, the descent of the Holy Spirit and the recovery of the Cross under Constantine.

CURIO STORES: Here are many curio stores selling all kinds of sea curious, sponges of all varieties and sizes, and various other novelties.

COFFEE SHOPS: A tang of the Near East is supplied through the quaint habits and customs of Tarpon Springs' industrious Greek people, and in their coffee shops is found a perpetuation of social and friendly gatherings.

HEALTH SPRINGS: Three miles south, wonder of na- ture, showing a head outlined in lithia rock. Here are also some old crooked oaks, said by many to have been land- marks of the Indians.

XXII

INTRODUCTION

RIVER TRIP: A trip up the Anclote River proves de- lightful, for it offers an endless array of semi-tropical beauty (suspended for duration of war). Lake Butler, forming the east boundary of Tarpon Springs, also is a beauty spot and a favorite haven for fishing.

SALT-WATER fishing also is a favorite sport here, boats being available for party rental by the day, or for open parties.
