INTRODUCTION
R. L. Polk & Co.'s 1923 edition of the Arcadia City directory being the second issue produced by them, is herewith presented to patrons. Especial care has been taken to secure and compile every available item of data concerning the social, commercial and industrial interests of the city and the result is a complete and comprehensive work that will fully meet the requirements of patrons and the general public as a reliable index to the city and its various features.
The volume is arranged in Departments as follows:
The Miscellaneous Department, pages 13 to 17, contains information relating to city and county govern- ment, cemeteries, churches, commercial organizations, courts, hospitals, labor organizations, clubs, post office, railroads, schools, secret organizations, etc.
The Street and Avenue Guide and Directory of House- holders occupies pages 19 to 34.
The Alphabetical List of Names of Citizens, business firms and corporations is embraced in pages 35 to 81.
The Classified Business Directory, pages 83 to 99, includes the names and business address of all persons, firms and corporations engaged in business, compiled alphabetically according to the business or profession engaged in.
ARCADIA
THE BEAUTIFUL CAPITAL OF DE SOTO COUNTY, FLORIDA
Arcadia is the seat of justice of DeSoto County, Florida; located 275 miles southeast of Jacksonville and 70 miles southeast of Tampa; in the heart of the greatest citrus, cattle and trucking section of the State; on the eastern bank of Peace River, 10 miles above Gulf tide- water; 61 feet above sea level; practically in the center of the county north and south, and is the junction of four railroads, viz., the Atlantic Coast Line, Charlotte Harbor & Northern, East & West Coast, and the Government Air Service Line, which will no doubt, in a short time be extended to the East Coast. No other city of its size in the State can boast of as many railroads. The junction of the Dixie Highway north, south, east and west, all approaches to the city, are paved with concrete or asphalt. Only 30 years old. The best all-the-year -- around business town of its size in the State. Clean, sanitary and healthful. Beautifully laid out, with palmetto trees along the main business streets and oaks, eucalyptus, maple, camphor and pines making beautiful thoroughfares along nicely kept lawns dotted with all kinds of tropical and semi-tropical plants and shrubbery. The Federal census of 1920 credited Arcadia with a population of 3,479, a gain of 89.59 per cent. over the 1910 census; but the present population is estimated at 6,500, including suburban areas.
THE HEALTH, CLIMATE AND TEMPERATURE OF SOUTH FLORIDA
The health, climate and temperature of South Florida is not surpassed by any State in the Union; but this is a fact not generally understood by most people, especially by those who have never been in the State, many believing that it is a land of swamps, alligators, snakes and ven- omous insects; that malaria, typhoid and sub-tropical diseases are prevalent, that the summer temperature is very excessive, and the rainy seasons are very disagree- able. All of the above are erroneous ideas.
It is true there are some swamps, especially in the extreme southern peninsula, some of them being drained, but in the greater part of the State the beautiful fresh water lakes, which abound in fish and are ideal for bath- ing and boating, with the most beautiful scenery sur- rounding them, are much more numerous than the swamps.
As to the healthfulness of Florida, there is not a State in the Union that has a more healthful climate or one more conducive to longevity.
Such diseases as pneumonia, pleurisy, lagrippe, rheu- matism, etc., are practically unknown, and when a sporadic case case does happen it is extremely mild. The

INTRODUCTION
Florida climate is noted for its beneficial and often curative effect on asthma, bronchitis and all catarrhal affections of the nose, throat and chest, many sufferers being permanently cured every year.
It is doubted if there is a State in the Union where one can spend a more delightful summer than in South Florida, the temperature never going above 96 degrees and the usual range is between 80 and 90 degrees, and there is always a cool breeze. The summer nights are always cool, it being necessary for one to sleep under cover almost every night, a contrast with most States. The only way that one can appreciate the delightful sum- mers is to spend one in Arcadia.
Pen cannot print or artist paint a mind's picture of the delightfulness of the winter climate, and with fresh water and surf bathing, boating, fishing and hunting of wild game, which is plentiful, tourist hotels with beau- tiful golf links, and numerous good roads, Florida has become the winter playground of America.
