the farms. In recent years stock raising has been notably added to the farming enterprises and with distinct success. Hogs and cattle, sheep, goats and poultry, and even pigeons raised com- mercially, are found to yield handsomely in reward to those who give them proper attention. Miami has a curb market in which the farmers of this immediate section sell their products direct to consumers on certain days of the week, proving an advantage to buyer and seller.

Among the crops which are the most largely sent into the markets of the world from Miami are tomatoes, grapefruit, avocadoes, limes, oranges, beans, eggplant, peppers, potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Public Utilities-The public utilities of Miami include telephone, gas, water, electric light and power, water and street railway systems. These are strongly financed and aggressive. keeping up with the progress of the city and introducing mod- ern methods as rapidly as possible. The street railway system is extended to Miami Beach across the causeway.

Railway Center-The Florida East Coast Railroad has its shop yards in Miami and this city is the center of all its opera- tions on the southern section of the road. Miami is the starting point for the Oversea Railway service to Key West. Fast trains from New York, Chicago and intermediate points connect with all lines from the North and West, and in the winter season the railway maintains a forty-hour connection with New York and rapid transit with other centers of the country. Trains are espe- cially equipped for the comfort of travelers.

PREFACE

The publishers herewith present the ninth annual issue of the Miami City Directory, with the assurance that no pains nor expense have been spared to produce a work which in respect of completeness and accuracy, cannot be im- proved upon.

The scope of the current volume has been increased to meet the growth of the city and as rapidly as the outlying portions and various additions to the city are built up and populated, the territory covered by the City Directory is increased to meet the requirements. The department of Miscellaneous Infor- mation beginning at page 61 is a complete and comprehensive guide to the State, County and City governments, Churches, Public and Private Schools, Banks, Courts, Clubs, Secret Societies, etc. The "Street Guide or Directory of Householders" which will be found beginning at page 79, consists of the name and description of each street and avenue in alphabetical order, the numbers on cach thoroughfare also being shown, together with the name or names of occu- pants of each building. and at what number the intersecting streets cross. By use of this department the exact location of any house or building can be im- mediately and exactly ascertained. The Alphabetical List of Names commenc- ing at page 207 contains the names of all business firms and corporations and the inhabitants of the city over a certain age, together with the occupation and residence address of each individual. Coconut Grove residents are listed separately and will be found beginning on page 953.

The Classified Business Directory, beginning on page 819, is a complete ex- hibit of the commercial, manufacturing, professional, financial and other busi- ness interests of Miami, arranged in alphabetical order under their respective headings.

POPULATION.

The customary means of estimating the population of a city is to multi- 1 ply the number of names in the City Directory by 21/2 to allow for the names of women and children not included in the Alphabetical List of Names. In the present volume there are 15,438 names. By use of the above multiple, a popula- tion of 38,595 is shown. In comparing this estimate with National census fig- ures and estimates from other sources, it should be born in mind that the ter- ritory embraced in the directory canvass is not confined to the city limits, but is extended to include the immediate suburbs, the inhabitants of which are so closely identified with the city that a directory which did not include Buena Vista, Miami Beach, Grapeland, the Allapattah section and other additions to the city on the north and west, would not be complete.

In conclusion, the publishers desire to extend their grateful appreciation to the patrons of the work for their support and to the general public for their co-operation in furnishing the desired information, both of which are necessary to assure a modern directory for a modern city.

Respectfully,

R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
