Preface
In presenting this, the twentieth volume of the Tampa City Directory, the publishers feel confident they are giving to the public the most complete and accurate directory ever issued.
The department of Miscellaneous Information beginning at page 69 is a complete and comprehensive guide to the State, County and City governments, Churches, Public and Private Schools, Banks, Courts, Hospitals and Asylums, Clubs, Benevolent, Literary and other associations, Labor Unions, Secret Socie- ties, etc. This is followed by the Street Directory, or Householders Guide, pages 85 to 173, which consists of the name and description of each street and avenue in alphabetical order, the numbers on each street also being shown together with the names of the occupants of each building and at what number the intersect- ing streets cross. By use of this department the exact location of any house or building in the city can be immediately and exactly ascertained.
The Alphabetical List of names commencing at page 176, contains the names of all business firms and corporations, and the inhabitants of the city over a certain age, together with the occupation and address of each individual. The Classified Business Directory, beginning at page 1153, is a complete exhibit of the commercial, manufacturing, professional, financial and other business inter- ests of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under their respective headings.
The canvass for the current edition as heretofore, has been extended to cover West Tampa, Seminole Heights, Sulphur Springs, Moody Heights, Ballast Point, Palmetto Beach, Gary and other outlying territory, the residents of which are so closely identified with the city as to make their inclusion in the city directory a necessity.
Population.
Directory estimates of population are not in any sense theoretical, but founded upon facts, and the names contained in the work substantiate the claims made by the publishers. In estimating the population of Tampa the ratio of 21/2 to each name has been used. From long and varied experience this multiple has been found the most dependable and is the one most used in the large cities. There are contained in this volume 33,926 names, and by the use of the above mul- tiple a population of 84,815 is indicated for Tampa and continguous territory.
In conclusion we wish to extend our thanks to the public for their co-opera- tion and assistance and to the patrons of the work for their patronage, without which a creditable publication would be impossible.
Respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO.

TAMPA STATISTICS
ELEMENTS IN CITY'S ADVANCEMENT
Tampa's climate is one of its greatest assets. Thousands of peo- ple come to the city because of its delightful climate; many of these people become permanent residents, many become winter residents, and a good percentage of them invest in the city or section. Tampa's back country, a splendid farming and citrus fruit section, is largely responsible for the city's growth and development. The city is well supplied with parks and playgrounds, handsome municipal, federal and office buildings, beautiful residential sections, well-paved streets and permanent highways in all directions. Tampa is building on a solid foundation.
INDUSTRIES
Tampa is famous the world over for the clear-Havana cigars made in the local factories, of which there are approximately 200. (This industry has just emerged triumphantly from a nine-month's cigar strike; the manufacturers winning out in an open-shop contro- versy.) Shipbuilding has become a permanent industry in Tampa, eight ships, amounting to 39,820 deadweight tons, were launched from Tampa yards in 1920, giving the city a total shipbuilding record of 24 ships, aggregating 116,220 tons. Other products manufactured include fertilizer, furniture, office fixtures, asphalt paving blocks, cigar boxes, candies, marmalades and jellies, macaroni, soap, mat- tresses, coffee, machinery, and numerous others.
CITY STATISTICS
Area of the city, 8.6 square miles.
