SECRETARY ATLANTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING, MANAGER.
V. V. BULLOCK and MRS. F. A. SAUNDERS, Publishers and Proprietors.
THE FRANKLIN PRINTING AND PUBLISHING CO. GEO. W. HARRISON, MANAGER 1897.
INTRODUCTION
In writing the introduction to volume XXI of the Atlanta City Directory, we have the painful duty of noting the death of Mr. H. G. Saunders, who for ten years has compiled and edited the Directory, and who, as Secretary of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and in many other ways, was intimately associated and identified with the business life of our city.
The management of the 1897 edition of the work has fallen upon his late business associate and partner, who has used his utmost endeavors to make the new edition as complete, accurate and up to date as the previous issues to which our patrons have become accustomed. The same pains and care have been expended, and the same force em- ployed, therefore, we confidently trust our friends will find the same volume with the exception of the added pages, made necessary by the very gratifying increase of the city's population.
It was freely predicted that the city would experience a period of stagnation after the close of the Cotton States and International Expo- sition. This prediction has happily failed, as is evidenced by the favorable reports from all quarters, the very gratifying results of the city's census for the postal authorities, which was confined strictly to the corporate limits, and which has caused our postoffice to be ranked in the first class by the United States Postoffice Department, and of the census taken in connection with the canvass for the City Directory, which embraces every person having active business association with our city. The new Directory contains 34,740 names, which shows a population of 117,864 persons directly interested, drawing their sus - tenance from, and contributing to the upbuilding of the city of which we are all so justly proud.
The Building Inspector's report for the year just passed shows that three hundred and sixty residences have been erected. While some of these, of course, have taken the place of others burned or removed, still the increase is most gratifying to our civic pride, especially as the Directory shows no increase in the number of houses reported unoccudied.
We are able also to congratulate our patrons and friends upon such an increase in the number and improvement in the quality of office buildings and business blocks erected or in course of construction as no other similar period of our city's history can show.
We wish to thank our patrons for the generous treatment we have received, and to assure them that it will be our constant pride and endeavor to keep the Atlanta City Directory up to the high stan- dard set by the late Mr. Saunders.
V. V. BULLOCK, Manager.

Hermitage Heights Pasturage.
The Hermitage Heights Pastures contain 200 acres of BLUE GRASS, CLOVER and BERMUDA GRASS, interspersed with beautiful running streams, and is unexcelled in this section of the country. A specialty is made of Veteri- nary Treatment, and the Pasturage has the added advantage of the constant attendance of a Veterinary specialist, who has had thirty-five (35) years' experience in the U. S. Cavalry. Horses are pastured, and if necessary, treated for every conceivable ailment (except those of a contagious nature), on very reasonable terms.
A large number of Box Stalls are furnished.
In special cases, arrangements are made to pasture horses at night, obviat- ing the possibility of color being changed or darkened by two much exposure to mid-day sun.
Treatment of Contracted Feet is a specialty. We have in use " Pasture Tips" or "Slippers," which are scientifically applied according to the usage of the best Veterinary Universities
In fact, our Veterinary Department is supplied with every appliance for treating all classes of complaint in Horses, (except those of a contagious nature, which we invariably decline), and our experience covers every disease known to the Equine anatomy.
We also take horses by agreement to feed night and morning.
Thorough Breaking for Saddle or Harness executed by careful and scien- tific methods.
If your horse shows temper or even undue restiveness, send him to us. We can correct his faults.
If your horse is lame, or suffering from any other disability we can help and probably cure him.
