Fourth. For the mutual protection and advancement of the established and prospective interests of all who may become mem- bers, by personal advice and assistance of members as may be mu- tually satisfactory, desirable or advisable, and by such other means as may, from time to time, be shown to be wise, proper and lawful.

FOREWORD

With this the 1903 Atlanta City Directory we present its 27th edition. In it we have embodied the greatest care, the most money, and best work we have ever done in the directory field.

In it we feel sure that you will find the fewest errors, both of omission and commission, the largest number of legitimate names, correctly spelled and located, and the best classification of Atlanta's business that has ever been pre- sented.

We take great pride in the Atlanta City Directory because Atlanta is the most progressive city in the South. For the year 1902 Atlanta showed the largest postal receipts in the United States for her size. The last United States' census accords her the largest percentage of growth in the South; her Clearing-House Receipts and Building Permits for 1902 were the largest in her history ; she has more and larger office buildings than any city in the world for a city her size, and she is rapidly forging to a front place in manufacturing enterprises-all this with a population of 138,000, of which only two-thirds are white. This is a record to be proud of, but we can do greater things yet to upbuild, enlarge and enrich our city and ourselves. We can BUY ATLANTA-MADE GOODS AND KEEP OUR MONEY AT HOME. We have many and varied industries, that produce nearly every commod- ity we need, of a quality as good, if not better, than that from abroad, and the cost to the consumer and dealer is the same if not less.

Among the many things manufactured here that have gained reputation for quality in their line are: Southern Saw Company's Saws, Capitola Flour, Glory Soap, Tera-Sope, John M. Smith's Carriages, White Hickory Wagons, South River Brick, Parian Paint, Atlanta Table Company's Goods, Valdes Cigars, Hagan's Ginger-Ale, Daniel Bros.' Shirts, Dixie Ventilators, Coca-Cola, Aphro, Pratt's Carbonated Gas and Epsom Salts, Mrs. Leyh's Pretzels and Saratoga Chips and Mrs. Hill's Jelly. We also make good furniture, stoves, bedsteads, bed springs, mattresses, carpets, rugs, picture mouldings, hats, neck wear, suspenders, overalls, sunbonnets, wrappers, hosiery, shoes, candy, crackers, syrup, medicines, cotton bleaching, sacks, paper and wood boxes, excelsior, agricultural implements, steel tools, machinery, electric appliances, mantels, doors and windows,; and many other things.

As keeping the money at home is the principle of a nation's prosperity, so it is with a city; therefore, with such an array of meritorious articles made at our own doors, why should we not keep practically all our money at home, and draw much from abroad?

Our aim shall be the continual improvement of the book, so that it will always give full, reliable and accurate information, thus doing Atlanta full credit abroad, and Atlantians good service at home; to which end we ask your fullest co- operation and thank you for past kindness.
