PREFACE.

This is the 29th annual edition of the Atlanta City Directory and in presenting it we feel that it reflects credit upon Atlanta and honor to her citizens.

During the year Atlanta has enlarged her territory by the ad- dition of the 8th ward, thereby securing more than the coveted 100,000 people within the actual city limits; this, however, does not affect the City Directory, because we have always included in the book those who live as far out as Buckhead, College Park, Waterworks pumping station, Kirkwood, Lakewood, Westview, East and South Atlanta, and in making our calculations as to the population they have always been figured in.

As the city can now afford to stand squarely on her actual pos- sessions, we feel that it would be wise, for the benefit of future records, to confine our figures as closely as possible to the actual residents within our borders; therefore, while we have this year, as usual, canvassed the suburban territory, we base our calcula- tions on Atlanta's actual residents and also give an estimate of the number of people who live just outside the city limits.

POPULATION

Within the city limits 108,381 Within the territory compassed by the directory and outside of the city limits 39,528

147,909

This shows an increase of 7,427 people since last year.

This, coupled with the large amount of money spent for rail- road terminals, yard and trackage property in and around the city, and the large number of new industries located here, and old ones increasing their facilities, mark 1904 as the most prosperous year in the history of Atlanta, and to-day promises greater things than ever for the future.

Buy home-made goods and keep Atlanta money in Atlanta and thereby help make Atlanta the biggest and wealthiest, as it is the best and healthiest city in the Union.

Respectfully, ATLANTA CITY DIRECTORY, JOSEPH W. HILL, Mgr.
