from its publication ; but you will not have the satisfaction of saying that you have helped to supply a needed convenience for your city. HANLATER'S ATLANTA CITY DIRECTORY. There are some, however, who, from no lack of public spirit, but on account of unavoidable circumstances, such as want of a permanent location or other excusable reason, are not represented in our ad- PREFACE. vertising department, and we can only hope they will have better luck next time. To those whose bearish nature would not permit them to treat our canvassers with that courtesy due to gentlemen, we have only to say, that your lack of those generous impulses which should char- acterize the gentleman, is only equalled by your want of business penetration and manliness of heart. In presenting to the public this, the first volume of HANLEITER's ATLANTA CITY DIRECTORY, the publisher feels gratified that, under all the circumstances, he is able to say that it approximates his idea of what a Directory should be, nevertheless, he does not claim for it an entire perfectness; indeed such a thing as a perfect Directory is an impossibility. One who has never attempted a similar enterprise cannot appreciate the vast amount of labor, time, trouble or expense at- tending such a publication. We have labored hard and pushed on through difficulties and obstacles that at first seemed almost in- surmountable, but which, we are happy to say, have vanished before honest and persevering effort. 'Tis many weary, anxious nights since we have been at liberty to enjoy the social intercourse of our domestic fireside-for, during the compiling of this work, we dared not trust ourself to repose or social enjoyment, and the "wee smae hours of the morning" has, for weeks past, found our lamp lending its rays in fur- therance of the work. That some persons will find fault with our efforts is to be expected, for that spirit called cacosthes carpendi, is very natural in some breasts and we do not expect to altogether escape its sneers. To J. Walter Bigsby, Esq., who has done most of the business can- vassing for this work, and whose interest in it has been shown by the indefatigable manner in which he has performed his portion of the very arduous duties, we are mainly indebted for its correctness; and, at his request, we return thanks to our citizens for the courtesy shown him during the getting up of the work. We are also under especial obligations to B. W. Wrenn, Esq., Gen- eral Ticket Agent of the W. & A. R. R., for a uniform kindness towards us, and for many special favors. We recognize him as one of the most affable gentlemen with whom we have had dealings. Our thanks are due to many other gentlemen who have placed us under obligations for favors, and we will ever cherish a remembrance of their kindness. We claim some credit for presenting our community with the very convenient and beautiful map of the city which accompanies our work. It was engraved especially for us, and was worked in colors, by that excellent pressman, James D. Robinson, Esq., of the Constitution office, and our patrons will appreciate the additional pains which we have taken to present it in so handsome a shape. It alone is worth to every citizen the price of the volume. Many reasons might be given why our book is not more nearly per- fect : First, It is the first of the kind published in our city for several Our Sketch of Atlanta was unavoidably delayed until the last hours, when we wrote it on the impulse of the moment, and had not time to give it a second writing. In it we have endeavored to be honest and truthful, rather than elaborate or elegant, and if we have written any- thing "for high," it has been the spontaneous drippings of an unao- customed pen, snatched up during moments stolen from hours heavy laden with business cares and responsibilities. years past. Second, Our people are so busy attending to their own business that if a person happens to be absent from his residence when a canvasser applies for his name, the neighbor, in a great many instances, cannot give the desired information, and hence it is liable to be left out. 'Some such cases have occurred and, while we have remedied No business notice has been (nor could it be) purchased in its col- umns, and when we have mentioned particular persons or concerns, we have done so believing that their enterprising spirit has merited it. In Our Business Directory will be found very complete and reliable. It is, we believe, gotten up in as convenient and perfect a style as any other ever published. And we take this occasion to return thanks for the very liberal patronage which has been extended by our citizens, and for the confidence they have displayed in our capacity and inten- tion to get up a reliable work. We are sure that Atlanta will be bene- fitted by the publication of this Directory, and that our advertising [NOTE .- We have at our own expense, under instruction from City Council, registered the sum- bers of the business houses in the city, and regret to say, that after a small portion of this work was printed, a change was ordered, adding eight additional numbers to one side of Whitehall street. No Inconvenience can arise now from this change, as the more important portions of the work complies with it, and we hope, before our next edition, that the buildings will be tastily numbered. patrons will feel, before the season is ended, that they have not invested their funds in vain. To those who have refused to aid us, (and we are happy to say they are few,) we will say you will find your businesses and locations faithfully set forth in these pages, and get a deal of ad- vertising for nothing; you will fall heir to much of the benefits accruing conclusion, we invite a careful scrutiny of our Advertising Department. Let no one who desires to purchase goods fail to refer to it; for there are represented our most liberal and sagacious business men, most of whom we have the honor of a personal acquaintance, and cheerfully recommend. W. R. H. them as far as possible, there are some instances where our efforts to do so were futile. JOHN T. HAGAN, Sole Agent for the Petro Oil, and Dealer in Coal Oil, etc .-- Page 12. Within a period of four years, the city has had an accession of about 10,000 inhabitants, the knowledge of which fact will serve to some extent, to account for the increased number of deaths. During the years 1866 and 1867 the victims of small-poż contributed a large per centage to the lists of interments.
