INTRODUCTORY.

To the Citizens of Atlanta :

We take pleasure in presenting to our patrons the ATLANTA DIRECTORY for 1874. It has been compiled with great care and at large expense, and we trust that on examination it will be found correct and satisfactory. The list of names and the accompanying statistics give evidence of a rapid growth, both in numbers of in- habitants and material wealth. It is our intention to issue the Directory annually, more extended and varied in its contents each year, keeping pace with our rapidly growing city.

We remain yours truly,

BEASLEY & CO., 4. Publishers.

EXPLANATION.

Streets running east and west through different wards are divided as follows: Between the 1st and 2d wards, by Whitehall; between the 5th and 7th wards, by Peachtree; between the 5th and 6th wards, by W. & A. R. R., thus, E. Hunter, W. Hunter, etc.

Streets running north and south between the 2d, 3d, 4th and 7th wards are divided by Decatur ; between the 1st, 6th and 5th wards by Marietta-thus, N. Broad, S. Broad, etc.

The city not being laid out at right angles, many of the streets do not run with the points of the compass, and from that cause portions of the streets designated as North and South run north- east and southwest; the same feature applies to those designated as East and West.
