INTRODUCTORY

We take pleasure in presenting the public herewith what we be- lieve to be a more accurate and complete City Directory than Atlanta has ever had.

The utmost care has been taken, from the inception of the work to its close, to obtain correct and reliable information, and to arrange and classify it in the most convenient form. Absolute freedom from error can never be attained, nor should it be expected in a work of his character, and we only claim to have put forth our best efforts to make a volume of which the citizens, and we as publishers, should be proud.

In our judgment, it is not the province of the Directory publisher to enlarge upon the wealth or poverty, the high or low taxes, the good or bad system which prevails in the government of the city. The question asked by the seeker for knowledge within these pages will be, "Where can I find the party I want ? ", " Who represent the different lines of trade or manufactures in Atlanta ?" " Who are the members of the firm with which I desire to transact business ?" Or perhaps the inquiry may be, "How does the population compare with that of former years?" "Is the city advancing or standing still ?". To all such inquiries this volume will, we think, give satis- factory answers.

The Directory of Atlanta for 1875 contained 7,805 names ; that of 1876 8.249. This book contains 10,273 names-an excess of 2,124 over the last issue, and 2,568 over the issue of 1875.

In connection with the canvass, a census of the population was taken, the returns from which show Atlanta to have 32,835 inhab- itants.

It may be proper here to state, however, that no census, not even that of the United States government, is or can be complete. If, in- stead of endeavoring to obtain and furnish as reliable a census as possible, we were to estimate the population, as is done elsewhere, and used the lowest multiple which is used in any city, viz. : 3%, it would show the present population of Atlanta to be 35,956 .* With

"The difference which exists between the figures here given and those given on page 63, is explained by the fact that the latter were printed before the full returns.were in. ..

ATLANTA CITY DIRECTORY.

the absolute returns of the census, and the estimate as made in other cities, if any one wishes to take the "golden mean 'twixt two ex- tremes," no objection will be offered.

It was our intention to have added to the Directory a new city map, but we were not able to make the proper arrangements. In the absence of a map however, we call attention to the newly revised Street Guide, pages 17 to 27, which, though incomplete on account of the defective system of numbering which prevails, will yet be found of much assistance to the stranger.

Much time and labor have been expended in the arrangement of the Appendix, pages 29 to 62, and we invite special attention to it as containing a large amount of interesting information concerning city, county, State and government officials, courts, churches, schools, secret and benevolent societies, railroads, money order offices, pop- ulation of principal cities, etc., etc.

To our advertising department we refer with pleasure, as repre- senting many of the best houses in the city, and we hereby extend our thanks to our advertisers and patrons generally for the encour- agement we have received at their hands. "A city directory is in constant use throughout the year, referred to by thousands tipon thousands of different people, many of whom the advertiser would reach by no other medium, and, aside from the fact that the stranger forme his estimate of the public spirit and enterprise of a city more from the appearance of its directory than in any other way, we be- lieve that each one of the advertisers does, in the course of the year, receive a personal return that more than pays for the investment.

In conclusion, we would state that it is our intention, Providence permitting, to continue the publication of the Atlanta Directory from year to year, and we believe we can safely promise that the book for 1878 shall be as much superior to the present work as We think the present work is superior to any previous directory pub- lished in Atlanta.

Very respectfully,

A. E. SHOLES, Publisher.

GUIDE

To Streets and Avenues in Atlanta and Suburbs.

Compiled and Arranged by C. W. Norwood.

EXPLANATIONS.

Reference to the "Guide" will show the streets, avennes, etc., in alphabet- ical order regardless of location. To principal thoroughfares is added the in- tersecting streets, and, so far as practicable, corner numbers are given, so if one wishes to find, say No. 41 Whitehall, it will be seen that No. 21 is at cor- ner of Alabama, and No. 63 corner of Hunter ; hence, the number sought is between those two streets. Many corners are destitute of numbers, which defect should be remedied.

The Union depot, between Pryor and Loyd, east and west, and Wall on the north, is the recognized central point, from which the city limits extend about one and a half miles in every direction, forming a circle.

There are four central streets from which others are numbered-viz : Deca- tur, running southeast and east; Marietta (continuation of Decatur), running northwest. . Peachtree and West Peachtree running northeast and north, and Whitehall running south west.

The system of numbering is a very defective one, and difficult to explain or understand. Odd numbers are on the right, going from the point of beginning ; even numbers on the left.

Ward boundaries, and halls and public buildings, may be found immediately following the " Guide."

Our thanks are due and hereby extended to Mr. H. T. McDaniel, City En- gineer, for his gentlemanly and efficient aid in locating streets, defining bound- aries, etc.
