Atlanta's foundries and machine shops are surpassed by none. They make sugar mills for Louisiana and Cuba.
GOLF IN ATLANTA.
Atlanta is said to be the golfing hub of Dixie. The East Lake Course is easily the finest in the South and is generally considered one of the best ten in the United States. Here have been staged several Championship Tournaments. There are two other 18-hole courses, two of nine and one of six. Golf is not only possible but enjoyable in Atlanta the year around.
PLACES OF INTEREST.
Confederate Soldiers' Home of Georgia, located in East Atlanta, is supported from funds of the State of Georgia. The United States Peniten- tiary, one of the largest and costliest prisons, established by the Federal Government and contains some of the most notorious criminals in the country. Present capacity of prision is 1,000. Fort McPherson, one of the largest and most completely equipped military posts of the United States Government.
STONE MOUNTAIN.
Largest solid rock in the world is sixteen miles east of Atlanta on good automobile road. This mountain is one of the nation's wonders, one mile up from base to summit and eight miles around the base. The Con- federate Memorial Monument is being carved on the steep side of the mountain.
STATISTICAL FACTS REGARDING ATLANTA. POPULATION.
The Federal Census of 1920 credited Atlanta with a population of 200,616, but the enumeration for that census was taken over a year previous to the canvass for this Directory and only included the population within the corporate limits.
As in previous years the Directory canvass was not confined to the actual city limits, but embraced all adjacent suburban territory, including the villages of College Park, Center Hill, East Lake, East Point, Kirkwood, Lakewood, Lakewood Heights, Inman Yards, Egan and Hapeville. These villages are to all intents and purposes a part of the social, commercial and industrial life of Atlanta; their residents are dependent upon that city for their prosperity, and they enjoy the civic advantages offered by it, since most of the residents have their business interests and activities therein.
The usual means of determining the population is to multiply the num- ber of names of individuals printed in the Directory by 21/2 to allow for the names of women and children not included in the enumeration. In the present volume there are 106,205 names. Multiply this number by 21/2 and we have a population of 265,512 for the territory covered by the Directory.
The sobriquet "Pinnacle City" is sometimes applied to Atlanta because the elevation of the city is much higher than the leading cities of the country-being 1050 feet above sea level; assessed valuation; real estate $255,000,000; bonded debt $5,687,500; tax rate $1.25 per $100; miles of streets 441; miles of paving 244; miles of public sewers 335; miles of side- walks 490; miles of electric street railway 225; miles of gas mains 248; parks and parkways 18, value $1,853,625; water works: capacity 6,395,000,000 gallons (10 months) daily average number of gallons pumped 23,900,000 (10 months), miles of water mains 412, value of plant $7,000,000; fire depart- ment: number of men 244, station houses 16, the department is completely motorized; value of buildings and lots $454,400,000, value of apparatus $234,590,00; police department; number of men 300, stations one; public schools 56, teachers 692, pupils 32,682, value of property $1,543,200; miscel- laneous schools 52; public library; number of volumes 80,000; postoffice receipts 1920, $2,744,654.39; banks and trust companies 20, deposits 1920, $168,320,678; clearings 1920, $3,256,765,739.48; theatres and motion picture houses 19; hospitals 14, hotels 48; manufacturing; factories 600, operatives 47,707, wages paid annually $33,277,719.67, value of annual output of pro- duction $178,299,337; value of real estate transfers 1920, $63,116,970, number of transfers 1920, 13,328; value of building permits 1920, $13,372,666.00.
THE ATLANTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce has been called the "Dynamo which generates the Atlanta spirit," and has for many years been the medium through which public-spirited men work together for the common good. The Chamber owns its building, in which are quartered its own offices, meeting rooms, assembly hall and offices of such organizations as the Atlanta Freight Bureau, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Retail Food Dealers Association, the Credit Men's Association, Atlanta Convention Bureau, Coal Merchants' Association, Printers' Board of Trade and the Boy Scouts of America.
If you have money to invest in business, if you are interested in a new and favorable location, or if there is further information regarding Atlanta which you desire, write to the Secretary.
DIRECTORY LIBRARY.
A library of directories of the principal cities of the country and State Gazeteers is maintained by the publishers at their offices 301 Gould Build- ing for the free use of patrons. As the latest directories are issued they will be added to the library, thereby keeping it up-to-date. We extend a cordial invitation to each and every one of our subscribers to avail them- selves of the privilege of consulting the library as frequently as desired.
ADVERTISING ATLANTA.
Copies of this Directory are placed by the publishers in Directory libraries, which are maintained in the principal cities of the country, where they are readily available for reference use by the public. There they serve as perpetual advertisements of Atlanta, for business men generally realize that the City Directory truly represents the community as does no other medium.
