AMES COMMERCIAL CLUB


The Ames Commercial Club was organized in January, 1918, by the business men of Ames, citizens of the town and farmers of the surround- ing territory. It has a membership of 100, is active in all community work. The AMES Commercial Club is a member of the Chamber of Com- merce of the United States.


Reciprocal relations have been established with all bodies of similar character and purpose in the United States.


Meetings are held at the call of the President.

AMES WOMAN'S CLUB


The Ames Woman's Club was organized in 1915 and Federated in 1916. It has a membership of about 130 ladies of Ames and vicinity. And is made up of the following departments: Art, Civics and Social Economics, Music, History and Literature, and Science and Education.


The General Assembly is held at the City Library on the 2nd Monday of each month.

Post office on the southwest corner of Kellogg avenue and Fifth street. City Library on the southwest corner of Douglas avenue and Sixth street. High School between Fifth and Sixth streets on the east side of Clark avenue.


Central Grade School between Fifth and Sixth streets on the west side of Clark avenue.


Beardshear School on the north side of Ninth street at the intersection of Carroll avenue and Ninth street, in the first ward.


Lincoln School on the northeast corner of South Second street and South Kellogg avenue, in the third ward.

The Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern depot is on the corner of Grand avenue and Lincoln Way.


THE STREETS AND AVENUES


The avenues run north and south, the streets run east and west, and are numbered north and south from Lincoln Way.


Main street is Fourth street.


All streets south of Lincoln Way are designated as S. 2nd, S. 3rd, S. 4th, etc.


All streets east of Duff are designated as E. 2nd, E. 3rd, E. 4th, etc.


That part of Lincoln Way east of Duff is called E. Lincoln Way, and that part of Lincoln Way that runs north along the west side of the col- lege grounds is called North Lincoln Way. .


The city is divided into four wards. The first and second wards are that part lying north of Main street. The third ward joins the first and second wards on the south and extends west as far as Squaw Creek. The fourth ward is that part of the city lying south and west of the college grounds.


The avenues of the first and second wards, beginning at the east side, are as follows: Crawford, Carroll, Duff, Douglas, Kellogg, Burnett, Clark, Wilson, Grand, Hodge, Northwestern, Park, Brookridge, and Orchard Drive.

Burnett avenue is the division line between the first and second wards.


Beginning at the east side of the third ward, the avenues are as follows: south of Lincoln Way: Kingsbury, High, Summer. North of Lincoln Way: Born, Center, East, Des Moines, Duff, Sherman, Kellogg, Washington and Walnut. Des Moines Branch of C. & N. W. R. R .; Grand, Elm, Oak, Maple, Hazel, Russell, and Riverside Drive.


The avenues of the Fourth ward, south of the campus and beginning at the East side are: Beach, Ash, Lynn, Stanton, Welch, Hayward, and Sheldon.


The streets of the Fourth ward and south of the Campus, are Lincoln Way, Chamberlain, Hunt, Knapp, Baker, Little, Donald, and Storm.


Boone Street runs West from the Southwest corner of the Campus. The streets south from Boone, are Woodman and Leek.


West of the Campus the avenues are: North Lincoln Way, Hyland, Campus, Howard and Forest Glenn. Wells and Wilmath avenues are outside the city.


The streets west of the Campus, beginning at the West gate, West, Ellis, Woodland and Oakland. Coral street is north of Boone, but out- side the city. Lettie is in Clark's addition and outside the city.


The streets and avenues of the College Heights Addition are: Gable Lane, Sunset Drive, Greeley street, Gray avenue, Cessna street, Graeber street and Country Club Boulevard.


AMES VOLUNTEER FIRE CO.


This organization has an excellent fire fighting equipment in the way of a volunteer company of citizens and business men and a $6,000 fire truck.

IOWA STATE COLLEGE


Iowa State College located two miles west of Ames, Iowa, offers courses in agriculture, engineering, home economics, industrial science and veter- inary medicine. The equipment and instructing forces of the college enable it to rank among the best of its kind in the country.


Iowa State College has turned out men and women who can be found all over the world leading in their respective fields. Agriculturists from here can be found running successful farms in every part of the country. Engineers have been doing big things all over the world. Gradu- ates from the home economics department, besides making successful homes, have gone out in the dietetics, hospital work and other lines, such as running large restaurants. Veterinarians are practicing suc- cessfully. Industrial science graduates have met with equal success.


Central building, shown above, is the main building on the campus which covers 125 acres. In this building are located the administration offices, the main library, and departments of botany, public speaking, history, mathematics and modern languages. The building which is of buff Bedford stone, cost $375,000 to construct.

IMPORTANT EVENTS


The Celebration of the home coming of the Ames Boys from the World War was May the 20th, 1919.


The Thirteenth Biennial Convention of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs met in Ames, June 11-14, 1919.


The first Airship owned in Ames was driven from Chicago, July the 24th, 1919, by Lieut. Walter F. Harriman, owned by Walter and L. H. Minart.


The new Manual Training Building for the Public Schools was completed September 20, 1919.


The Grand Lodge of I. O. O. F. of Iowa, held their annual in Ames, October 20 to 25 inclusive, 1919. Ames has the distinction of being the only city of less than 15,000 population that has ever enter- tained the Grand Lodge of Iowa.


Suggested, That every lot owner in the City of Ames, plant at least one apple tree in the park or somewhere on the lot for a shade tree, in the spring of 1920 to help fight the high cost of living in the future.
