BOARD OF REGENTS.


LEGISLATIVE HISTORY.


By an act of the General Assembly, approved February 25th, 1847, the government of the University was vested in a BOARD OF TRUSTEES, consisting of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, as ex-officio President, and the Treasurer of State, ex-officio Treas- urer, and fifteen members, to be elected by the General Assembly.


January 15th, 1849. the Governor of the State was added as an ex- officio member of the Board.


January 25th, 1855, the Board of Trustees was required to elect their own Treasurer.


By an act approved March 12th, 1858, the Board of Trustees was made to consist of the Chancellor of the University, as ex-officio President, the Governor of the State and Superintendent of Public Instruction, as ex-officio members, and twelve persons to be elected by the General Assembly.


December 25th, 1858, the Board of Education passed an act pro- viding for a Board of Trustees consisting of seven members, all to be elected by the Board of Education.


March 21st, 1864, the General Assembly having abolished the Board of Education, vested the government of the University in a Board of Trustees, composed of the Governor of the State, as ex-officio Presi- dent, the President of the University as a member ex-officio, and seven members to be chosen by the General Assembly.


April 11th, 1870, the Government of the University was vested in a Board of Regents, consisting of the Governor of the State, as President ex-officio, the President of the University and Superintend-, ent of Public Instruction as members ex-officio, and one member from each Congressional Distrist, to be elected by the General As- sembly.


In 1872 the ex-officio membership of the Superintendent of Public Instruction was abolished, and in 1876 it was restored.
