INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting this issue of the Directory for the City of Mus- catine, the publisher takes pride in the fact that he is enabled to offer a more correct, and in every way, a more creditable work to the city than has been before issued. No pains have been spared to embrace everything pertaining to a legitimate city directory, and to present each separate feature in as correct and reliable a manner as it is possible for it to be done. The work has been promptly and efficiently performed, and the printers and binders have shown that they are capable of executing - work that is a credit to the city.
Great caution and industry have been exercised to have it correct up to the time of publication, and so little time has elapsed since the canvass was made, that it cannot possibly have the appearance of being old when given to its patrons; and while it does not fall into the hands of so many as to be very profitable to the publisher, yet it is hoped that it will lay the foundation for more encouraging work in the future.
10
It contains some four thousand names, which would indicate a population for the city of about twelve or thirteen thousand, upon the basis of directory computation. It shows that Musca- tine is entitled to be ranked as one of the enterprising and growing cities of the great state of Iowa. Her city institu- tions are a credit to the public spirit of her people, and are evidences of her wealth, enterprise, and culture. And it is hoped the Directory now presented will be found to be in keeping with these evidences of her growth and advancement, and will help to present the city in its true light to those into whose hands it may fall.
The publisher also would express his thanks to this people for the courtesy extended while preparing the work, and hopes, should he return again, to meet the same friendly treatment, and an increase in patronage.
