INTRODUCTORY.

N presenting to the public this volume of the Muscatine City Directory, its publisher feels a pride in having the pleasure of saying to its patrons, that he has been met on all hands with a liberality and a cordiality which has been very encouraging indeed. And in responding to this feeling, he hopes his labors have been crowned with a success never before attained in an effort to present the people of Muscatine with a reliable and satisfactory work in all the essential features which go to make up a trustworthy directory.

Muscatine, since the publisher, some five years ago, issued a similar work, has had a most extraordinary growth, and very marked improvements are seen on all hands.

This work contains something over five thousand names, and computing the population at three for every name, it pre- sents the very gratifying result of over fifteen thousand inhab- itants, which is a fair estimate based upon directory computa- . tion.

The last census gave to Muscatine a greater ratio of increase than any other city in the State, with one or two exceptions.

ix

-

This also should be a source of great satisfaction to the enter- prising people of this beautiful city. These evidences of prosperity manifesting themselves everywhere, bespeak a bright future for the city. Its magnificent high bridge is a source of pride to not only Muscatine, but to the State at large, for no other city within its borders is able to present as nota- ble a structure, and it has been the result of Muscatine's enterprise and perseverance. It speaks volumes for the people of this growing city, and will largely tend to draw attention to her as a desirable place to cast an anchor for future indus- tries and desirable improvements.

This is not the place to enlarge upon the various enterprises now established, and which arc adding so essentially to the city's growth and prosperity.

The book itself is an outgrowth of its changes and progress, and the pages are marked by these evidences, and will fre- quently be referred to for encouraging signs of advancement.

The publisher desires to extend his thanks to the good people of Muscatine for their cordiality toward him in his efforts to get up this work, and the universal courtesy manifested, and should it be in his line of duty to return at some future time to prosecute a like enterprise, he hopes to meet a like response.

CHAS. I. BARKER.
