1
In presenting this our second volume to its patrons and the public, It is the hope of the publishers that it may prove to be the valuable book of reference for which it is designed. We have no doubt that our efforts to compile the most complete and reliable Directory ever offered to the citizens of Des Moines, will be fully appreciated by those who have the best interests of our city at heart. In the census report embodied in the work will be found a new and distinct fea- ture, which we trust will be of great value and interest to our citizens; the result of incessant labor to render it as accurate in its statistical and enumerative tables as it is possible to make a compilation of its character and design. The enumeration we have made, prokes con- elusively that Des Moines, in point of population is a city of the first class:
The compiler congratulates his fellow citizens that while we have a city which for beauty of situation is scarcely rivaled in our glori- ·Ou8 commonwealth, it presents advantages in all its great industrial aspects excelled by none, and in the energy, thrift, moral status, and intellectual character of its people cherishes a just and laudable pride!
Since our last publication, the number of business houses erected shows a large acquisition to the wealth of Des Moines. Our city is advancing. Let there not be one to undervalue its importance or ignore its wall-grounded hopes of future prosperity and greatness. . Thanks to all who have in any way encouraged the enterprise. wat a

CITY OF DES MOINES.
When we compare our city of to-day with the Des Moines which ve first saw a few years ago, we see many great improvements and substantial marks of progress,
Few cities in the west can make an exhibit of more actual pro gress than Des Moines. Most of the wealth here represented was accumulated right here in Des Moines by earnest toil.
We may say that we believe there is not a city in the State, of the same population with the same number of fine residences and business houses, and where the society is as good.
The city that should atpract most the capital and enterprise of the . east is Des Moines, the Capital of the State, situated at the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, and occupying a sort of amphitheatre, the bluffs arising by gentle acclivities on all sides, affording fibe residence sites, while the level portion is large enough to accommodate the business of a large city.
In ares Des Moines includes about twelve square miles, all suit, ble and laid ont for building purposes. The city is improving rapidly, both in the erection, of handsome and comfortable dwell- age, and imposing and beautiful business blocks.
The Des Moines river, which flows through the heart of the city, is spanned by four bridges six hundred feet in length, two of which are irpp, while the 'Coon Has also two bridges, affording to South Des Moines and the rich prairie beyond, easy communication, with the various parts of the city.
On the 22d day of September, 1851, the citizens of Fort Des Moines voted to have it incorporated as a town, and articles of incor- poration were adopted by the people on the 18th of October, 1851.
In 1853, by act of the Legislature, Des Moines was incorporated 88 a town. At this time the town had increased to ench importance that attention was turned to it as the Capital of the State. Its een- tral geographical location at once induced the sanction of the people of the State, and in 1854 an act was passed by the Legislature des- goating Des Moines as the Capital of the State. A subsequent convention to revise and amend the State Constitution permanently fixed the Capital at this place.
In 1857 a successful movement was made to incorporate, the city of Des Moines ... An act of incorporation was passed by the Legis- ature, and approved by James W. Grimes, Governor, January 28,
1857.

Bushnell's Des Moines Directory
The main part of the business is at present done on the west side of the river, but is rapidly reaching over the river, as there is a magnificent country east of the city.
The surroundling country is abundantly supplied with streams of the purest water, upon the banks of which streams are found plenty of different kinds of ! timber.
What facilities, it is asked, has Des Moines, either natural bor ac. quired, for becoming the commercial centre ? .
The growth of Des Moines has been very rapid since the adrent and opening of the railroads.
Unlike the Iowa cities on the Mississippi and Missouri, which are numerous, Des Moines has no rival. This will allow Des Moines to make a far greater growth than it could otherwise lope to obtain. Please take a glance at the map, and think of the pros- pective | roads whose termini will be Des Moines; and that the roads east, west, north and south, are extending their artne for their share of the merchandise and freight which must come here.
Are not all the roade looking to a connection with the great con- tinental thoroughfare? What does this indicate, but that Dos Moines is fast becoming a railroad center ?
One of the great advantages which Des Moines claims is, that it is backed by a farming country which can scarcely excelled.
be
!
!
In view of the large mechanical population which will be brought here in the construction of railroads, the establishing of manufactories, and other works, we know of no place on the Amer- ican continent which presents better opportunities for the.invest- ment of capital) or which promises a more enduring |prosperity. For the Western trade, what town so favorably situated ? With the before named advantages to make it the market for the West, and insuring it cheap transportation from the East, it could not be better situated in reference to this trade. Indeed, the start already made in this direction is some indication of what may be expected in the future; and who knows but what Des Moines is to be the great commercial as well as railroad centre of the West. | It is no speculative idea to-day, as to 'the place where will be the great railroad center, for we have already many railroads converging here, within the corporation. We need only think of the rapid growth of our city to know that before long it will be the metrpp- olis :of the north west. -
MANUFACTURING
It will only be necessary to let the enperior natural advantages of Des Moines for manufacturing be known, to secure to this city a large proportion of the immigration from the East We can see that there are untold and undeveloped markets for manufactured products north,
south, east and west of Des Moines, millions of

NEW RAILROADN.
The Albia, Knoxville & Des Moines Railroad -Designed to extend the line of the North Missouri Railroad to Des Moines. This projected road, now giving evidence of an early construction, is one of the most important interests affecting this city. Travers- ing in almost its entire length, a region vastly rich in coal, and abounding in timber for mechanical and building purposes in ex- haustless quantities, and opening up to this city direct communica- tion with the entire Southern country, and a rival route east ward; it cannot be long, if proper aid is secure,, before the products of this region will be pouring into the lap of our city, and in exchange, everything in the mercantiledine and mechanical products, which can be amply and cheaply furnished here will be returned to the denizens of this and the regions beyond.
Des Moines de MaGregor (narrow guare) is pow completed and operated a considerable distance, and it is believed 'will be completed to Des Moines within twelve thonths. This road hasan importance to Des Moines which will befreadily understood by ref- erence to the important improvements now in active, progress, and to be pushed forward to early completion| May it come to our city apon; we believe it to be an important route!
Des Moines Western (narrow guage), Con which a considerable amount of grading has been done the past season, will strike the Missouri river at Sionx Cily, and cross an undeveloped prairie country, susceptible of an nhtold wealth of agriculture, by this road made tributary to Des Moines, making it an important line to our city | It is said to be surveyed through an excellent portion of our State.
Des Moines de Ames Railroad. The subsidies available are eight thousand acres of Polk county lands, worth sixty thousand dollars + taxes voted along the line, sixty eight thousand dollars, add engineering, right of way and grading, fifty five thousand dollars, there being eightec: miles of it with the grade pearly: complete, needing only surface grading to make it ready for the ties to con- nect Des Moines with the Northwestern at Ames, being one linkin the Iowa & Minnesota Railroad.
