PREFACE.
In presenting this, bur fifth volume of the Des Moines City Directory, to its patrons and the public, it is the hope of the compiler that it will prove the valuable book of reference which it is intended to be! "It has been with pleasure that we have labored to compile a work representing a city which is making more substantial progress from year to year ithan any other in Iowa. Of this, no one who has given the subject a careful investigation can entertain doubts.
The population has wonderfully increased during the past two years, now numbering over of twenty two thousand. We congratulate our fellow citizens upon the rapid development of the business, commercial and manufacturing interests, A city: which for beauty of situation is scarcely rivaled in our glorious commonwealth, presenting advantages in all its great indus; trial aspects, exceeded by none. | In the energy, thrift, moral ! status and intellectual character of her people, she cherishes a just and laudable pride ..
The work contains a complete resident and business direc- : tory, a full list of churches, educational institutions, orders, so- cieties, city, county and State officers, also, a complete postoffice directory of lowal. Pains and expense have not been spared to make it the most perfect directory our city has ever had, and creditable alike to city, patrons and compiler. Thanks to all who have in any way encouraged the Directory. , Hoping that Des Moines may speed its way forward as rapidly in the future as in the past! until it becomes what it is destined soon" to be, the metropolis of Iowa if not of the northwest, we bid all a kind farewell until next year.|
Yours respectfully
THE COMPILER.

DES MOINES.
We have but little space in which to speak offour city, his- torically or otherwise, yet we feel that something should be said of the present business, commercial and manufacturing in- terests; coal mines, railroads, natural advantages as a commer- cial center, future prospects, etc.
The causes which have contributed to the rapid and solid growth of Des Moines are not difficult to discern. Situated in the heart of the Des Moines valley, at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, surrounded by one of the richest agricultural regions of the whole country; Nature seems to have indicated the spot where the metropolis of Iowa, I if not of the North-West should be located.
No city in Iowa presents so good a prospect for the future as Des Moines, no other gives evidence of more enterprise. The city is improving rapidly, both in the erection of hand- some and comfortable residences, and' solid, imposing and. beautiful business blocks. We learn from our contractors ! and builders that there has been an unusually large number of buildings erected the past season, and that there is as great a demand at present, and, before the season is over, there will be ! as much building done as in any year previous. .
The coming year will undoubtedly be one of unusual activ- ity in building, and will vitness a large and rapid growth of our city. The population has wonderfully increased during the past two years, now numbering twenty two thousand, one hundred and sixty-four: these figures we present with pride, showing the increase in population since the publication of our, last Directory, yet they are reliable, and are given with no desire to please those who may be ambitious to triumph over neighbor- ing cities, but to place before the public the truth. While this increase has been rapidi it has been nevertheless healthy, and has brought to the city | population exceedingly desirable."
Des Moines has every element necessary to make it a great manufacturing center ;; doal is abundant and cheap, there being some fifteen different mines operated, employing from eight hundred to one thousand men. | An inexhaustible water power is here, which should be more extensively' utilized, and the suc- cess of the factories |already established, and the rapid settle- ment of the county tributary to the city, are warrants for the ! establishment of many more. We take pleasure in noticing

dustrial Exposition building, the Des Moines University, and a inumber of fine Public School buildings, Moore's Opera House, land the Academy of Music.
The East side can boast of a number of handsome business blocks, and elegant residences also. |Among the public build- ings we notice the new Capitol building, which; when finished, is estimated to cost about three million dollars. and it is thought will be the finest State House in the United States. A fine Opera House, built this year by C. G. Lewis, and several ele- gant Public School buildings are prominent among the public edifices. This side of the river is building up rapidly, and her business men are prosperous, having, east of the city, one of the finest agricultural regions in the country to support it. 11
South Des Moines, containing | as it does our largest coal. . mines, is rapidly building up. The country back of this part of the city is not surpassed in agricultural wealth. The bluffs here present some of the most magnificent views in or about Des Moines. Live business men are taking advantage of the opportunities afforded here. A new Public School building graces this side, also a new building has been erected for church purposes, where union services are held regularly under the care of Dr. E. R. Hutchinsil
We bespeak for this part of the city, as well as the others, a bright future.
In the vicinity of Des Moines are many attractive resorts, and numberless views lof picturesque scenery. Our city is not .. only attractive because of its beauty, but the statistics of mor- tality as given'by our city sexton, prove it one of the most healthful cities in the country. | The number of interments for the year 1876, was, adult males, sixty-three; females, fifty- eight; children, two hundred and two. Deducting from the above, sixty-five, which is the estim ite for non-residents of the city, we have two hundred and sixty-one as the number interred in all the cemeteries in 1876. In viewv of this showing, our mor- tality statistics will compare favorably with those of any city of equal population anywhere.
Qur rich farming land, which is the foundation of wealth, can never be moved. Our advantages are therefore perma- nent, and not accidental of subject to other laws than the laws of nature!
It will be well for capitalists, and particularly for men with moderate means, desiring to acquire rapidly, to give close at- tention to the attraction which Des Moines possesses over any city in the West.

that Des Moines manufactures are equal in appearance and quality to the best products of eastern manufacture .;
Des Moines has the following' railroads: The Chicago! Rock Island and Pacific; the Keokuk and Des. Moines; the Des Moines and'Fort Dodge; the Des Moines, Indianola and Missouri; the Des Moines, Winterset and Southwestern; and the Des Moines and Minneapolis, Narrow Guage.
Our city is fast becoming a railroad center, the Indianapolis of the west. There are quite a number of projected roads, among which we would mention the following: The Des Moines, Osceola and St. Joseph, narrow guage, a portion of which will be built this year; the Des Moines and Afton, the tax for which has been voted, thus insuring it's early comple- tion. There is a narrow guage talked of from Des Moines to Knoxville, thence southward. A line between Des Moines and Council Bluffs, called the Des Moines Western, has been surveyed, passing Perry, and through the State midway be- tween the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific and the Chicago and Northwestern railroads, with a good prospect of its being put through at no very distant day. The Des Moines and Minneapolis company are pushing their line through to Minne- apolis. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific company ex- pect to finish the branch now completed to Knoxville, from that point to Indianola, giving us still another line. Also, we understand that the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy intend running a branch line from some convenient point west of Ot- tumwa to Des Moines; this done, Des Moines is the focus for direct lines leading north, east, south and west, and connecting. with the largest cities in all parts of the country.
The home insurance companies should have special mention. The Equitable Life takes rank as one of the safest, most thor- oughly solvent institutions in the land. | It has not been affect- ed in the least by any of the financial crises. | It is now in its new home! Equitable Block, Fifth St., corner. Post Office Place, Hoyt Sherman, President; J. S. Polk, Secretary.
The Hawkeye Fire, E. J. Ingersoll, President; A. Howell Secretary. -
The State Fire, John A. Elliott, President; Matthew Long : Secretary.
The above insurance companies are perfectly sound and reli- able. As an evidence of this, we find them endorsed by our best business men and wealthiest citizens.
At present the west division of the city is the largest, and contains many fine, substantial business blocks, as well as beautiful residences. Among the principal building's we notice the United States Court House and Post Office, the Iowa In-
