WONDERFUL RESOURCES
IOWA.
Few eastern, people realize the size and fertility of | fowa, the most beauti- ful of prairie states. Its area (over 35 000,000 acres, making it equal to the states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, combined.
"For the year ISSO the value of its principal agricultual products, Including corn, whelt, rye, oats, barley, potatoes and hay, exceeded $125,000,000; this sam considerably exceeds the total value of the above products in the states Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode --
bt Maine. New Hampshire, Island, New Jersey and Delingfre. It also exceeds the value of similar pro- duets of all the following southern states, viz: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, ; Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. When it is remembered that the area of the southern states named in seven tilties that of down, the wonderful productiveness of this great state can be Chfized.
{Id is Admitted il I Jowa will soon rank as the first agricultural state in the Union ; the census of 1880 sheses the population to. he over 1,600,000 and all this is the growth of less than half a century.
This great state is represented by only one Agricultural Weekly; The Live Homestead. of D'es Movies, has weathered the storms of twen. ' six years, and Is now recognized as the especial representative of this great agricultural state, and the ablest exponent of its wonderful industrial resour- des .- New York Independent.

In connection with the change in form and enlargement, we have thought it pulvisable to abbreviate the somewhat cumbersome name of Western Stock Journal and Farmer to Western Farm Journal, as above. This `bilings it almost to the original name "'Farmers Journal,"" under which it Was w. established at Cedar Rapids in 1872. Since that date the following papers have been consolidated withyour Journal: | In-1875 the Farmers' Stock Jour- nal; in 1870, the Fine Stock Gazette, of Vinton, Iowa; In 1877, the Producer and Progressive Farmer, and this year the Farmers' advocate, of Grinnell.' The united circulation and strength of all these papers give to The West- er Farmld a place no other paper 'can hope to attain among : western farmers.

PREFACE.
The value of a city directory lies chiefly in the degree of ac- curady with which the location of each resident is indicated there in. Des Moines has now assumed such proportions- its limits have ex. panded to such dimensions, and her population increases so rapidly ; by immigration that a directory, published annually, at least, and promptly, Has become an absolute necessity; ! In endeavoring to
. supply: that want the publishers of this volume have not aimed to ---- prepare a book any larger than was necessary to contain the heeded Information. It was not their design to print a history of the city ; the time for that has not yet come ; nor did they fill their pages ! with fulsome prophecy of greatness to be achieved ; for that is as apparent to one as to another. : The object sought to have been accomplished is the correct location of each resident, his occupa- tion, and a complete catalogue of the business houses and institu- tions of the city. The work to secure correctness in these particu- lers has been indefatigable, and this directory is sent out with the consciousness that it is the most accurate and complete resident guide ever laid before the citizens of Des Moines. (The directory. will be issued annually, a linje for its publication will be fixed, and . it will be gotten out with as much promptness at the intricate char- 1 acter of the work will permit.
Thanking the public for the liberal patronage extended to this, i. our first effort, we 'subscribe ourselves
Very respectfully,

:
A WORD ABOUT DES MOINES.
Iowa, containing a population of a million and three quarters, and yet but comparatively -sparsely settled, with favorable climate re 'and unsurpassed agricultural and mineral resources, has within her borders no large city | This is a singular circumstance and has been the cause of much conjecture. Nearly every state in the union, and especially every northern state, has some chief com- mercial centre around which cluster the general business interests of the commonwealth ; affording a market for the surplus products, . exchanging the manufactured article for the raw material, which in; turn is converted into objects of marketable value; Manufacturing industries are a valuable adjunct to the building up of large. cities. The growth of Minneapolis Has resulted' largely from the fient ! fliversion of an excellent water-power from its natural river channel and its conversion into a motive force for the driving of various kinds of machinery!' Mercantile interests alone are generally slow in establishing populous communities ; but in combination with manufacturing industries, a complete system of railway connections with the outside! world, and business activity and judgment char- acterizing the acts of representative citizens the increase of popu- lation and wealth should be rapid. ; Minneapolis to-day would have been a smaller city than Des Moines but for the enterprise of such ofher citizens as like character, who
the Washburne's, the Pillsbury's, and others of converted the town into the great flour manu- facturing centre of the world. .
But few more years will pass before Lowa will contain a city of 50,000 population, and which will rapidly reach rbo, doo. That city . abd h I will Be Des Moines, (The development of this city in the past few years has proved a surprise, to the state, but our growth within the, coming ten years will surprise ourselves. This directory shows that we have a population of over 30,000.|| Past growth will be of in- terest in connection with the figures. . It is illustrated by the fol-
lowing data :

DES MOINES BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
The causes of this creditable growth are obvious. Des Moines' is the centre of the great coal producing section of the state! The lowa mines are but partially developed, but they are attracting new capitol and fresh energy from many
directions. Easy .of access and exhaustless in supply; the lowa coal fields furnish a cheap source . of power for, driving machinery, thus attracting the manufacturer have led the from the less inviting fields. The institutions that way, and are the pioneer enterprises, are prospering and finding a yearly increase of business. And numerous other and larger insti- tutions are coming almost daily. The favorable location of Des Moines and her rapid development in all the essentials of a great city are attracting attention in other states. . A Chicago paper of a late date gives the following truthful resume of the present situa- : tion :
The capital city of dowa is not only the headquarters of the political and social movements of the state, but in contrast to most of the capital cities of the states of the union, is also a railroad center and a manufacturing city of magnitude. . During the past ten years the city has doubled her population, and in the near ful ture will be the leading city west of Chicago, the reasons for which are obvious. In the first place, the city is located in the midst of the richest and most productive agricultural region in the west. Then she is so located that a railroad center at this point is inevi- table, and what seldom state, is the immense and happens at the seat of government in any growing manufacturing interests. .. To-day Des Moines has two distilleries, one of which is the largest in the world ; a glucose factory, of immense proportions ; a starch factory that will employ 'during the coming summer nearly two hundred : men and women ; two large packing houses that slaughter nearly 200,000 hogs annually .; h paint manufactory that will soon supply the western country with the most needful article ; a woolen mill that will provide a home market for this important product ; two large linseed oil mills that provide a home market for this profitable agricultural product ; three of the largest boiler works in the west- ern country ; and an endless number of machine shops. So that with the present boom in the way of building, it is no wonder that, lin spite of the muddy streets of former days, any man may feel F proud to say that he halls from the capital city of Iowa,

TRADE AND : IMPROVEMENTS.
The year :88i was probably the most prosperous in the history of the city. " New buildings and improvements were conducted on a larger scale, than in any other single year. Trade in all its branches greatly increased, the aggregate transactions reaching hearly sixty millions, designated as follows !!!
Wholesale trade.
$20.081,781
Manufacturers . 12,788.781
Grain and produce.
'2,770,250

$57,081,583
The item of buildings and improvements include the| erection of seven hundred and twenty-five'residences and thirty seven busit I hess blocks. | The prospect now is that the record of last year will be surpassed this season, notwithstanding the increased cost of ma- terial and higher wages.
Several residences surpassing in elegance anything now in the city are in contemplation, while the number of smaller homes alteady under way is legion. A large number of business blocks, some of which will compare favorably with our present imposing fronts, are also in course of construction.
DES MOINES STREETS.
The city council has let contracts for the paving of. oven three miles of streets and the work is now well under way. The material used is cedar blocks, Before another winter mud will be a thing of the past on our principal thoroughfares. The street railway service 11 is being also extended, and a continuous line of track will soon ex- tend from Cottage Grove to a point east of the new capitol, and from Fifth and Walnut streets to North Des Moines. The efficiency of the service will also be greatly increased, and it is likely the time is not far distant when the public demand for a car every five min- utes will be supplied.
RAILROADS.
The excellent railroad facilities, connecting Des Moines with the surrounding country in nearly every direction, have been a very potential factor in its development. ; The Rock Island was practi- cally the first road to reach the city, the first regular passenger train reaching there over that line, September 9th, 1867. Being pushed on rapidly to Council Bluffs, it has continued to hold the heavy bulk of travel acquired by its early prestige."It has fully kept pace with the public demands in the matter of passenger and

freight accommodations, and to-day no finer trains of cars cross the . prairies of Iowa than those of the great Rock Island. The near 0 future will find it with a double track from Davenport to the Missis- sippi river. :
The other railways centering there are the Chicago & North- western, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. Wabash, St. Louis & Pa- 1 cific, Keokuk & Des Moines, Des Moines & Ft. Dodge, Des Moines Northwestern, Des Moines, Indianola & Missouri, Des Moines, Winterset & Southwestern, Des Moines, Osceola & Southern, and |the St. Louis; Des Moines & Northern.
The projected lines are the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul ; Wisconsin, lowa & Nebraska (so-called " Diagonal") and the Des Moines & Kansas City. It is probable that all three of these lines will reach us this summer. They are all important ronds, and their coming means a great deal to the future of Des Moines. Through Minneapolis, & St. Louis trains will undoubtedly run here at an .carly 'day, thus giving direct communication with that important point. : With the consummation of these projects there will remain nothing more to be desired in the matter of additional railway fa- gilities:
The activity in real estate is greater than ever: capital is seck- ing investment in legitimate interests ; and the outlook was never so encouraging. The coming five years will be years fraught with prosperity and growth to a rare degree. It is the duty, as it should be the pleasure, of every citizen to aid in that direction . Des Moines should no longer be content with the appellation of " Me- tropolis of Iowa ;" it should be her aim to surpass any city between Chicago, and the mountains, north of St. Louis. The possibilities
are hers.' Let her people be content with nothing less
