PREFACE.

The undersigned takes pleasure in presenting this the first- GAZETTEER AND DIRECTORY of Jackson County, Iowa, and be- lieves it will be found as correct and reliable as any similar work published in this State.

Unsparing efforts and great care have been taken to render it in every way a practical work of reference.

Most cordial thanks are extended to the mercantile and pro- fessional gentlemen of the county, who have so liberally patro- nized the work, by their advertisements.

The compiler desires particularly to accord his grateful ack- nowledgments for valuable assistance, and other courtesies rendered by A. J. House, late County Auditor ; W. C. Swigart, editor Jackson Sentinel; Russell Perham, Esq. ; Mott Watson, Esq., and Capt. W. A. Warren, of Bellevue.

In conclusion there remains one pleasant duty to discharge, that of making honorable mention of the GAZETTE PRINTING COMPANY, and in particular of Mr. H. C. Marsh, the efficient superintendent, whose practical skill in the typographic art has produced a work, at once a credit to themselves and the publisher.

F. E. OWEN.

SUPPLEMENTARY NOTICES.

In our editorial review of Maquoketa we omitted the follow- ing notices :

HARRIS OPERA HOUSE.

This building, one of the handsomest and best constructed in the city of Maquoketa, was erected at a cost of $15,000 by J. C. Harris, Esq., a gentleman who has spent a large amount of money to advance the material prosperity of the place. Mr. Harris has been a resident of Maquoketa for 25 years, and es- tablished in business since 1857 as proprietor of the Novelty Carriage Works, where he manufactures everything in the line of light and heavy buggies, carriages, wagons, as well as the patent bent panel for bodies and seats. He employs a large number of hands, and turns out a superior class of workmanship.

D. C. SHAW.

This gentleman has been engaged for many years in the pho- tograph business in Maquoketa, and to further the interests of art in this vicinity has lately bought the right to produce the new and already celebrated picture-the Chromotype and a visit to his gallery will convince anyone of the amount of beauty which photography can receive from true artistic feeling.

NORTHROP & GLASER.

C. E. Northrop, one of the early pioneers, established himself in the furniture business in 1853. In 1867 Mr. Glaser became a partner. Being the oldest house in the business in Maquo- keta and thoroughly reliable, they have gained the respect of the citizens generally.

H. G. HASKELL & CO.

The above firm have lately bought the business long known under the style of B. B. Frase & Co. in the agricultural imple- ment line. Mr. Haskell has been a resident of Jackson county since 1841, and the acquaintance gained in the active business pursuits of his life, as well as the fact of retaining Mr. B. B. Frase and Mr. Coffee, warrant us in predicting a success.

JACKSON COUNTY DIRECTORY.

SKETCH OF IOWA.

France first claimed the territory now embraced in the State of Iowa. In 1763 it was ceded to Spain. October 1, 1800, re- ceded to France. April 30, 1803, ceded, with other territory, to the United States. October 31, 1803, a temporary govern- ment was authorized by Congress for this new territory. Octo- ber 1, 1804, it was included in the District of Louisiana, and placed under the jurisdiction of the territorial government of Indiana. July 4, 1805, it was incorporated with the Territory of Louisiana, which then had a territorial government. June 4, 1812, it was embraced in the Territory of Missouri. June 28, 1834, it became a part of the Territory of Michigan. July 3, 1836, it was incorporated with the Territory of Wisconsin. July 12, 1838, it was included in, and constituted a part of the new Territory of Iowa. December 28, 1846, admitted into the Union as a State.

This State, having a vast extent of the most fertile land, must, of course, raise, with the greatest ease, all the articles to which her soil and climate are favorable. By her long line of coast on the Mississippi, never hindered from being navigable by the lowness of water, Iowa has facilities for conveying her products, which the States situated on the Ohio do not enjoy. From her immense prairies and boundless summer ranges for stock, she has advantages for raising cattle and other stock superior to those of other western districts.

This State is undoubtedly the richest in soil of any in the Union, and, of course, holds out the greatest prospect of advan- tage to the agriculturist. Here is ample room for thousands of farmers, there being still vast quantities of first-rate land, ex- tending in every direction, uncultivated, which may be had at not only reasonable, but cheap rates, and one acre of which, in a majority of cases, produces at least twice as much as the same amount of land in most of the Eastern States. If rural pur- suits are pleasant or profitable anywhere in our country, they must be peculiarly so in Iowa, for here the produce of the farmer springs up almost spontaneously, not more than one-third the labor being necessary on the farms here that is required on those in the East.

HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY.

JACKSON COUNTY.

Jackson County lies on the Mississippi River, and forms a connecting link between the counties of Dubuque and Clinton. It was organized in 1838 by act of the Territorial Legislature of Wisconsin. The first county officers were the following: W. A. Warren, Sheriff; John Rowe, Recorder; J. K. Moss, County Judge ; William Morden, William Jones and James Leonard, County Commissioners. The early settlement of the county was doubtless due to its contiguity to the famous lead mines of Dubuque, and its commanding position on the highway of waters, being situated on that great eastern bend of the Missis- sippi river, commonly called " Cromwell's Nose."

The first Territorial Court was held in Bellevue in June, 1837, by Judge Dunn, of Wisconsin ; Hon. J. V. Berry, prosecuting attorney. Among the distinguished attorneys present on that occasion were Hon. E. B. Washburne, of Galena ; Hon. James Grant, of Davenport; Hon. James Churchman ; Hon. Peter Hill Engle, afterwards Judge of the Criminal Court of St. Louis, Mo. ; and the Hon. Thomas S. Wilson was appointed first Judge under Iowa Territory.

When Jackson, Jones and Linn counties were first estab- lished in 1837, the seat of justice of all three was located at Bellevue, where it remained until 1848, when it was moved to Andrew. It was again removed from Andrew to Bellevue in 1851, and from Bellevue back to Andrew in 1861. In 1873 it was removed from Andrew to Maquoketa, whose citizens erected a fine Court House at a cost of $15,000, and who have leased it to the county for a period of ninety-nine years. The jail still remains at Andrew, and is a substantial stone structure, and cost $8,000.

The surface of the county is, for the most part, undulating, having dense growths of timber in various parts, especially the valley of the Maquoketa.

One of the most attractive localities in this county has been saddled with a very inappropriate name-" Tete des Morts"

JACKSON COUNTY DIRECTORY.

Valley, but in spite of its ghastly appellation, this lovely vale abounds in life and beauty.

The curious effects produced by the vast cliffs of Galena limestone, rising from forty to sixty feet almost perpendicularly, and seemingly capped with living emerald, rolling back toward cloud-land, or lost in the towering bluffs at their back, may be imagined by an artist, but would require the pen of a Scott to depict in fitting language the grandeur and sublimity of the scene.

The Maquoketa river runs through somewhat similar forma- tions, and in some places the cliffs rise nearly one hundred feet from the water level. The county is well watered and drained by this beautiful river and its numerous branches, which are spanned in many places by some of the finest of iron bridges. The configuration of the county and the nature of the soil vary largely in different parts.

Limestone of various formations from the Niagara and Tren- ton to Galena, can be found in this county, and St. Peter sandstone is exposed in some places. Some iron ore has been found in various parts of the county.

The forks of the Maquoketa and its numerous tributaries form, in many places, unrivaled water powers. Building stone, and clay for making bricks, are abundant. Sand and materials for quicklime. Timber, the finest in the world. These, added to the vast water powers which only wait to be employed, and soil and situation unsurpassed, offer a good showing for the future of Jackson county, and especially qualify this county to be the home of agriculture, dairy farming, and stock raising.

There is a Poor Farm located three miles north of Andrew in Perry township, of 300 acres, on which has been erected a stone structure for an Asylum.

The county is divided into eighteen townships, as follows: Maquoketa, South Fork, Monmouth, Brandon, Farmer's Creek, Perry, Butler, Washington, Union, Tete des Morts, Bellevue, Prairie Spring, Otter Creek, Richland, Van Buren, Iowa, Fair- tield and Jackson.

HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY.

REMINISCENCES.

In the earlier years of the county, from the then unsettled condition of society, many were the exciting incidents which occured. Mr. Goodenow, in an interview with the writer, graphically describes having witnessed an encounter between two men who long had a dispute in reference to some land. He said : "Court was in session in Bellevue, and we, the jury, of which I was one, were standing on the river bank, waiting for the judge to come, when Dr. Sparks remarked that he expected to see a fuss between Davis and Groff, as they were both heav- ily armed. Davis had just landed from a steamboat from Dubuque, where he had gone in reference to the land, passed into a store, left his gun there, and walked out again in com- pany with his son-in-law, and started up the street. As we were looking at them and talking, Groff was noticed to come out of a doorway, walk crouchingly across the street, with his rifle in his hand, rest his arm on the fence, and draw bead on Davis, whom he shot dead in presence of fifty people. This man Groff was afterwards tried for murder, and acquitted on the plea of self- defence, although the jury were severely condemned for their action, and hung in effigy."

In our sketch of Jackson county, we desire to make mention of that old and respected resident, who settled in Otter Creek township in 1841. We allude to the Hon. James Dunne, who was born in 1823 in Kings County, Ireland. Mr. Dunne has ·become very popular with all classes, has served for nineteen years as Supervisor of Jackson County, and was elected as Rep- resentative to the Thirteenth General Assembly, a position which he filled to the honor and credit of his constituents. He is a man of unimpeachable integrity, cool and sound executive ability, as well as benevolent, kindly and social in heart.
