Preface.

I N presenting this first volume of THE BLUE BOOK OF DES MOINES, the publishers desire to express their acknowledgment for all the courtesy, complais- ance and assistance rendered. The great interest taken in compiling and editing the extensive material found in the different Directories has to a great extent facili- tated our endeavor to present a reliable and complete array of the educational, artistic, musical, religious, philanthropic and social life of Des Moines, as mani- fested in its Churches, Colleges, Schools, Clubs, Soci- eties and Associations. Those who have assisted in compiling and arranging all these lists are too many to enumerate, for they include almost all of our clergy- men, the secretaries and officers of the various clubs and associations, our leading society women, educators, artists, musicians, etc.

The publishers do not present this Directory as a finished, polished piece of work. They expect errors and omissions. To prevent these in a first edition would have been impossible, but they know that they have done their very best to furnish as complete and reliable information as possible. In another edition they will endeavor to correct these errors and omis- sions, if notified of their existence.

This publication demonstrates a common assertion, that Des Moines is decidedly a club town. Two hun- dred and fifty-two clubs and societies, with a member- ship varying from five members to six hundred mem- bers is a sufficient indication of the great popularity of

club life of a social, literary, artistic, musical or educational character. The educational facilities are extensive, and the lists of faculties in colleges and schools are a guarantee of the thorough instruction that can be obtained. Charity and philanthropy have able, influential and compassionate supporters. The spiritual need is well provided for by the large number of religious organizations and churches, with their efficient leaders and counselors. We feel warranted in making the assertion that there are few cities in the United States where the churches are so well attended as in Des Moines, caused, probably, by the high character and efficiency of its clergy.

. It is a great pleasure to the publishers to be able, through this volume, to present a record of all these sources of pride and gratification. They trust this pub- lication will be received in the same spirit.

Respectfully,

THE PUBLISHERS.
