INTRODUCTION

The Iowa State Highway Commission
The Iowa State Highway Commission was created in 1904 as a function of the Engineering Division of Iowa State College. In 1913 it was established as an independent de- partment of the State government.
The office at Ames is the headquarters for the state. In addition, there are six districts, 26 residencies and 24 main- tenance offices located throughout the state.
The physical plant on Lincoln way consists of one main office building, five annex office buildings, testing labora- tory, storage buildings, garages and a central repair shop and heating plant.
The Highway Commission has supervision over 8,652 miles of rural primary, 1,063 miles of primary extensions in cities and towns, 122 miles of state park roads and joint control with the 99 boards of supervisors over 91,086 miles of secondary roads. The annual business in fiscal 1958-59, $103,755,626.18, expenditures on primary roads for construc- tion, maintenance, right-of-way, engineering, traffic safety, accounting and legal counsel, and $26,351,467.16 expendi- tures on farm-to-market road construction. Since the first law was enacted in 1917, accepting Federal aid, $1,260,832,- 648.15 has been spent on the primary road and farm-to- market road system under the Commission's supervision.
The Commission employs 3,270 engineers, administrative assistants and maintenance men in all of its departments of which 700 are located at Ames.
The commission, on request, renders engineering assis- tance to various other state departments. This includes the making of surveys and preparation of plans and general supervision of construction and maintenance of public highways upon or adjacent to lands belonging to the state at the various educational, charitable and penal institutions, and at state parks, engineering assistance to the executive council on street improvements on and adjacent to the capi- tol grounds, assistance to the National Guard on projects in connection with the national guard camp, and various other technical matters which may come before such other state departments.
Ames Public Schools
With modern, well-equipped school buildings and with modern educational philosophies and practices, the Ames public schools offer a splendid opportunity for the education of the children of the city. The school plant comprises eleven buildings, with a present total new replacement value of $6,880,425. This plant includes the High School building with its splendid auditorium and gymnasium facilities; the Central Junior High School; the Welch Junior High and Elementary Schools; the Beardshear, Crawford, Edwards, Lincoln, Meeker and Roosevelt schools; the Field House and equipment. A fine stadium and lighted athletic field also are a part of the school plant.
Pupil enrollment in October 1958 was 4,068. The teach- ing staff numbers 240, and there are 46 other personnel- secretaries, cafeteria ladies and custodians. The Ames schools have a fine staff of supervisors who give guidance on the curriculum areas at all levels.
INTRODUCTION
During the past ten years five different bond issues have successfully carried to authorize the construction of three new elementary schools, additions to five elementary schools, and some remodeling of the junior high school facilities. There were a total of 41 classrooms and their related facili- ties in these construction projects. Some additional well- located sites have been acquired upon which to build more schools as they are needed to meet the growing enrollment. Planning is now under way for a senior high school on a 74 acre site. While the enrollment of the Ames Public Schools have been increasing by about 200 children each year, the average teaching load has been kept below 30 children per teacher by providing additional classroom space and more teachers.
Conclusion
From the foregoing factual data, it can be seen that Ames offers many advantages-social, economic, educational. It has an exceptionally high health rating; it is a city of beautiful homes, situated in one of the fairest states in the land, in the heart of the world's wealthiest agricultural region. Ames possesses virtually every element vital to the social and economic welfare and personal happiness of the individual, and every element of success for the small busi- ness or small industry.
Ames is truly a CITY OF OPPORTUNITY.
