" WATERED STOCK"

It has never been claimed by any reputable authority that there is any "water" in Bell Telephone stock. The actual physical property of the Bell System is worth more than it is capitalized for.

That a dollar's worth of property is actually there for every dollar's worth of stock that has been issued, has been proved beyond all doubt by hundreds of impartial investigations by commissions and governing bodies.

The Bell System is conceded to be the best constructed and best equipped telephone system in the world, yet the capitaliza- tion of the Company is less per telephone than that of any oth- er comprehensive telephone system on earth.

THE BELL SYSTEM

(42)

WHAT DO WE DO WITH YOUR MONEY

The Bell Telephone System has always recognized the right of the public to know how it operates its business and what it does with the money it collects from the people.

The investment of the Bell Telephone System, including in- strument, cable, wire, central office equipment, etc., averages $152 per telephohne. The average revenue collected last year from each telephone for local and long distance business was $40.20. This money was spent as follows:

$18.72 Employees' Wages. $9.62 Light, Heat, Welfare, Material, etc. $2.26 Taxes.

This leaves $9.60 out of the $40.20 per telephone, of which $7.75 was paid in dividends and interest on borrowed money, and $1.85 placed in a reserve fund for emergencies.

For seven years the Bell Company has not paid more than an 8 per cent dividend.

There is no "water" in the Bell Telephone stock, as has been certified to and confirmed by thousands of examinations and investigations.

It is our policy to have every employee proud of the Com- pany, proud to serve it and its patrons, and jealous of their own and the Company's good name. One Bell employee in every five, or 30,000 employees in all, own stock in the Com- pany.

THE BELL SYSTEM

The American Telephone

The states of Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and the Dakotas have more telephones than all Great Britain.

The city of New York has more telephones than all of France and Spain combined.

Iowa or Minnesota each have more telephones than all of Russia. Chicago has more telephones than all of Austria.

In the United States we have but 6 per cent of the world's population, yet we have 65 per cent of all the world's tele- phones.

Extending the Service

Widespread publicity, advertising and canvassing and good service have developed the telephone in the United States. The value of telephone service has been driven home to the public. New ways of using the telephone have been exploited and peo- ple have been taught to depend upon the telephone.

The government-owned systems in other countries neither advertise nor canvass for business. Telephone growth, the large number of telephone users that make the service valuable to the public, has not been encouraged.

The United States leads the world in giving the best tele- phone service at the lowest rates.
