HARLAN.

Harlan, a town in the center of the county, is the county-seat of Shelby County, and is located on the west bank of the West Botna River, twelve miles from Avoca Depot, on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad.

There are two churches in the town-Baptist and Methodist.

There is also in the place a fine large grist mill.

Messrs Vinton & Davis are the principal merchants of the place, and they are doing a very fine business.

AVOCA.

Avoca is a new town located on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and is springing up very rapidly. There is a good farming country around that is being settled up fast. It will be a good town some day.

TABOR, FREMONT CO., IOWA.

A Description of the Town and its Surroundings, a List of the Leading Business Firms, and a Description of its Principal Institution of Learning, Tabor College.

This town is situated eight miles east of Bartlett (a town on the St. Joe and Council Bluffs Railroad) twelve miles north of Sid- ney, the county-seat of Fremont county, twelve miles south of Glenwood, the county-seat of Mills County, and thirty miles south of Council Bluffs. It is near the line of Mills County, and used to be partly in Mills, before it was incorporated. The village numbers about 500 inhabitants. The early settlers were almost all from Eastern Ohio, on the Western Reserve-I need only say this in order to speak well of the class of people that make up the society. They laid out the town similar to the towns on the Re- serve, in Ohio.

The location of the town is very beautiful, having a fine view of the surrounding country for miles. Good and well improved farms can be seen in every direction. The surrounding country, as well as the town, is settling up fast, with the best of people.

There is very little attraction in Tabor for those who make their living by keeping saloon, and other such business, as there is nothing of the kind in the place.

The town is liked by all who visit it, not only on account of its pleasant and healthy location, but also from the class of people who make up the community.

I can but speak of the religious influence of the place, and its comparative freedom from the many temptations to which very

many other towns are subject. It is a place especially and favora- bly calculated for the training of the young. Almost all belong to the church, there being three churches in the town-Congrega- tional, Methodist, and Baptist-and they especially enjoy the in- fluence and teachings of the professors and teachers of the college, all of whom seem to labor zealously for that object. I have vis- ited the the place several times, and have been well pleased with my visits to the school.

The college is an institution of which the village of Tabor may well be proud. They have lately put up a very fine, large, brick boarding house, four stories high, with a basement. It will soon be ready for opening.

Business and Business Men.

The business of the town is very good, for a place of its size, as it has a fine, rich agricultural country surrounding it. Among the business men we find the following :

M. L. Carpenter, dealer in dry goods, clothing, boots and shoes, groceries, general merchandise, and agricultural imple- ments.

E. S. Hill, dry goods, groceries, books and stationery-the book store of the place.

D. B. Spees & Co, clothing, gents furnishing goods, hats and caps, boots and shoes.

F. Bosworth, wholsale dealer in all kinds of woolen goods and cassimeres.

H. S. West, fruits and confectionery, and dealer in all kinds of stationery. (Mr. West is the Postmaster.)

A. K. Townsend, harness maker and saddler.

J. F. Saborn, meat market.

Dalton & Clark, dry goods, groceries, &c.

Mr. Gleason, dealer in stoves and tinware.

C. Kernish, wagon and blacksmith shop.

G. W. Gaston, flouring mill.

Mr. McCormick, real estate and insurance agent, and dealer in agricultural implements.

J. N. Churchill, dealer in and general agent for all kinds of agricultural implements.

Geo Douglass, stock dealer.

Mr. Adams, cabinet maker and undertaker.

Kellogg & Son, carpenters and builders.

-

Weatherhead & Good, brick and stonemasons, plasterers, con- tractors, and builders.

G. W. Todd, livery feed, and sale stable.

R. R. Hanley, John Cleaver, and M. Otis.

J. F. Sanborn, dentist.

W. M. Brooks, dealer in organs, melodeons, &c.

Miss M. L. Todd, music teacher.

Mrs. D. B. Spees, milliner and dressmaker.

Mrs. Lawrence, photographer.

Tabor College.

This college is located in the central part of the village of Tabor.

The origin and growth of the college have been very remarka- ble Its founder was a Christian missionary, who longed to see this mighty valley overspread with an intelligent Christianity. After long and earnest prayer in the State of Ohio, a few families directed their course to Western Iowa, while it was still the resort of the wild Indian, and when the the howl of the wolf was heard at night, and the reindeer bounded in freedom over the prairies.

After many years of trial, privation, and suffering, an acade- my was opened in 1857, which, after nine successful years, in which ninety-six teachers were educated for the common schools, was organized with full college powers, July 23, 1866.

The college is not under the control of any religious body, though its professors and most of its trustees are Congregational- ists, and it is fully endorse by the ministers and churches of that order.

A convention of Congregational ministers and delegates from the Congregational churches of Western Iowa and Nebraska, held at Council Bluffs, September 19th, 20th, and 21st, 1866, about two months after its organization as a college, passed the following resolutions :

Resolved, First-That in the recent establishment of Tabor College we recognize an institution every way worthy of our con- fidence and support.

Second-That we regard the location of the college at Tabor as peculiarly favorable to its success, on account of its healthful and central position, the unanimity and liberality of its citizens, and the Christian influences of the place, and do cordially com- mend it to the patronage of the Christian public.

196

COUNCIL BLUFFS DIRECTORY.

Third-That we approve the proposition to now raise $100,000 as the first instalment on the endowment and building funds of Tabor College.

To surround the college with such influences as shall lead the young men and ladies who are educated here to go out as earnest Christian workers is the one leading object of the community, and .we doubt whether another instance can be found where a people have according to their means, given so liberally to the support of an institution of learning.

The founder of the colony has deeded to the college lands valued at $3,800, and has besides given abont $5,000 in cash and notes (one-half his entire property) ; has pledged his profits, and, if necessary to the success of the college, every dollar he pos- sesses. The citizens of Tabor gave and pledged unconditionally to the college, during the year 1866, $31,000, being $75 for each individual in the place, and, on the average, more than fifty per cent. on the assessed value of their property. In all, the people of Tabor and vicinity have given to the college more than $41,000.

With God's blessing, this college is destined to be a powerful instrumentality in moulding aright the millions who are soon' to find homes on the banks of the largest river in North America, and along the line of the railroad which is to be the central high- way of the world.
