There are two Base Ball Clubs, the Progress first nine, which is the champion club of Central Iowa. The Progress second nine is a junior club, but bids fair to become the champion club of the county.

INDEPENDENT FIRE CO. NO. 1

was organized May 1st, when a new Engine was purchased with Hose Cart and five hundred feet of hose. There are now sixty-one members, Hook and Ladder included, fifty-three of whom are fully uniformed and splendidly equipped, with J. M. Wright as foreman, John Eberhart first and R. M. Lane second assistants, Thomas Stitts being foreman of the hose carriage. This company is being well drilled, all of whom are stout hearty men, and of our most respectable citizens. The city council have put in a large cistern in Main street, opposite National Hotel, with a capacity of 250 barrels, for the use of the engine in case of fire. The cost of this fire department, including the new engine house in course of erec- tion amounts to $2,535, which puts La Porte on an equal footing with sister towns in regard to fire departments.
