I N introducing this, but noth . .1

We cannot help feeling a scary of plenty and sadness, as we are profoundly convined census has done our City an irreparable in

hand, we note with great satisfaction That !! lation, manufacturing, mercantile and all divet liti the lowest estimate of quy city its the l'opted States present volume contains 35,051 names. Deducting usual ratio, would give us $3.900 population. . We have madethe information this year with the utmost degree of thoroughness assert without any hesitation that the Des Moines City Directory will com- pare in accuracy and completeness with any similar work in the United States. We note with great pleasure the greatly increasing sales of the Directory year by year is fully keeping pace with the city's progress and

advancement. We must

understand that a City Directory is a

not merely a work of information to inform our citizens the address of our neighbors The object [and aim of such a publication is lvastly broader and higher, (leeper and more fartreaching! The Directory is the veins and arteries through which thei warm blood flows to sustain a City's life. | Without a well - regulated, accurate City Directory, no city has in our day, or in the days that havejgone before us, arisen to highest flood-tide of commercial appulance and permanent. prosperity.

We feel it is the most enjoyable part of our work now ended to thank most sincerely our fellow citizens for their uniform kindness and courtesy in furnishing accurate information to our canvassers in collecting the informa- tion for this volume.

-

NOTE + Our patrons will be good enough to remember that we have a most all City Directories at our office, fred to all
