HISTORY OF CRAWFORD COUNTY
tivation and improvement of a farm of one hundred and seventy-six acres on section 4, Nishnabotny township, Crawford county, belonging to his father.
On the IIth of March, 1903, Mr. Boeck was united in marriage to Miss Ella Reimers, a daughter of P. A. and Catherine Reimers, of Davenport. Their union has been blessed with one child, Mildren Evelyn.
Mr. Boeck is a stanch republican in politics and has ably served in the capacity of township trustee for four years. He is a third degree Mason and belongs to the lodge at Manilla, Iowa. As a substantial agriculturist and esteemed citizen of Crawford county he well deserves mention in this volume.
WILLIAM JOHN SCRIVER.
William John Scriver, the manager of the Stewart Lumber Company of Denison, has been actively and successfully identified with the lumber business here for the past twenty-seven years. His birth occurred in the village of Lacolle, county of St. Johns, province of Quebec, Canada, on the 2d of November, 1849, his parents being Edwin and Susan (Quest) Scriver, who were natives of Canada and England respectively. His parental great-grandfather was William Scriver, a Hollander. William Scriver, the grandfather of our subject, was born near Poughkeepsie, New York, and followed blacksmithing in early manhood but later took up farming. He removed to Canada when a young man and passed away in that country at the age of ninety-three years. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Ann Pearson, was past sixty when called to her final rest. Their children were three in number, namely: Edwin, Edward, and Mary Ann, the wife of W. R. Van Vliet, of Stevensville, Montana. The maternal grandfather of William John Scriver was a native of England and emigrated to Canada, where he died of cholera. Unto him and his wife were born the following children : John, Robert, Harriet, Susan and Ann.
Edwin Scriver, the father of the gentleman whose name introduces this review, was reared to the work of the farm and later took up merchandising, being identified with that line of activity throughout practically the remainder of his life. His demise occurred at Lacolle in 1881, when he had attained the age of fifty-seven years, while his wife passed away in 1893 at the age of seventy- three years. Both were Methodists in religous faith. Edwin Scriver served as a volunteer soldier during the period of the Fenian raid. He was the father of seven children, as follows: William John, of this review; Frederick, who is a resident of Seattle, Washington; Ernest Albert, of Merrill, Wisconsin; Victoria Alice, the wife of Charles S. Gilbert, of Wausau, Wisconsin; Herbert Edwin, who passed away in early manhood; and a son and daughter who died in early life.
William John Scriver was reared and educated in Lacolle, Canada, and after putting aside his text-books clerked in a store for several years. In August, 1872, he crossed the border into the United States, locating in Wausau, Wiscon- sin, where he likewise secured a clerkship. Subsequently he became identified with lumber interests there, operating a sawmill. In 1884 he came to Denison,

Iowa, becoming a member of the lumber firm of Scriver & Company, which was afterward incorporated as the Stewart Lumber Company. In the latter concern He has held the position of manager to the present time and his excellent execu- tive ability and sound judgment have proven potent clements in the continued growth and success of the business.
On the 5th of February, 1884, Mr. Scriver was united in marriage to Miss Hannah I. Force, who was born in Lacolle, Canada, and was a former classmate of his. Her parents, Alonzo and Caroline ( Van Vliet) Force, were likewise natives of Canada. Her paternal grandfather was a Frenchman and the father of four children, namely: Alonzo, Timothy, Hiram and Elizabeth Fosburg. Traver Van Vliet, the maternal grandfather of Mrs. Scriver, was a native of New York and became a plow and wagon manufacturer of Lacolle, Canada, where he conducted a foundry. He was a devoted Methodist and served as a Sunday school superintendent in Lacolle for over forty years, being absent but one Sabbath during the entire period. Unto him and his wife were born the following children : William, George, Caroline, Mary, Charles, Alice and Sarah. Monzo and Caroline (Van Vliet ) Force had seven children, namely: Emma, Edgar, Amelia, Fred. William, Hannah and Edward Albert. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Scriver were born three children, as follows: Marion Force Scriver. Stewart Alexander and Clara Ethelwyn. The wife and mother was called to her final rest on the 9th of May, 1906, when she had attained the age of fifty-two years.
In politics Mr. Scriver is a republican, while his religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Methodist church. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, having attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. He belongs to Sylvan Lodge, No. 507. A. F. & A. M .; Wausau Chapter, No. 51, R. A. M. ; and Council Bluffs Commandery. He is also a member of the Knights i Pythias fraternity. In citizenship he stands for progressiveness and substan- tial improvement and in all his relations with his fellowmen has shown a spirit of consideration and deference that has made him popular with his fellow townsmen.
HENRY HOEFER.
Thirty years ago Henry Hoefer, now of Charter Oak, became a resident of the United States and as a farmer and land dealer he has demonstrated his business ability, being at the present time one of the prominent real-estate men of western lowa. He is a native of Husum, Germany, born February 11. 1854, a son of Ingwer C. and Anna ( Moeller ) Hoefer. The father was superintendent of the poor farm during the latter part of his life and died in 1889, the mother having been called away in 1864. There were two children in their family : Agnes, the wife of Cornelius Boysen, of Germany; and Henry.
Educated in the public schools of his native land, Henry Hoefer continued in Germany until 1880 and then crossed the ocean to seek his fortune in the new world. He spent the first seven years in this country working upon a farm, after which he rented land upon his own account for four years and then bought

one hundred and sixty acres in South Dakota, subsequently becoming the owner of fourteen hundred acres, which he disposed of as opportunity permitted. He became quite successful as a dealer in land and having entirely disposed of his South Dakota property, he came to Crawford county in 1894 and opened an office at Charter Oak. He is an extensive dealer in lands in Iowa and in various other western states, and as he has a comprehensive knowledge of values and good business capacity, he has gained a gratifying measure of success in his vocation.
On the 16th of September, 1888, Mr. Hoefer was united in marriage to Miss Anna M. Schmidt, who was born in Germany, July 10, 1868, a daughter of Peter and Katrina (Nissen) Schmidt. There were four children in their family : Katrina, who became the wife of Fred Ahff, of Paullina, Iowa; Anna M. and Margaret, twins, the former of whom married Henry Hoefer, and the latter the deceased wife of Thomas Munster ; and Peter, of Woodbury county, Iowa. The father of these children died in Germany in 1878 and the mother was later mar- ried to Christ A. Hendricksen. After their marriage they came to America and in 1886 settled in Crawford county. Mr. Hendricksen opened a feed store at Ute, in which business he has ever since continued. The mother was called from earthly scenes in 1895. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hendricksen : Lena, the wife of Julius Clausen, of Monona county, Iowa; Christina, who married Herman Sievers, of South Dakota; Henry, also of South Dakota; Mary, the wife of John Holstine, of Paullina, Iowa; and Christ, of Monona county. Four children came to bless the union of Mr. and Mrs. Hoefer: Katrina, who was born February 18, 1889, and died in infancy ; Christ P., who was born June 29, 1891, and is living at home; Otto J., born March 13, 1892, who graduated from the high school and is now living at home; and Frank H., born August 15, 1893.
Politically Mr. Hoefer is in hearty sympathy with the platform of the demo- cratic party and by his vote and personal influence assists in supporting the party of his choice. Religiously he and his estimable wife affiliate with the German Lutheran church, in which faith they reared their children. A patriotic and pro- gressive citizen, he always aims to keep abreast of the times. He is well informed as to the progress of events in the state and country and as an intelligent business man, who has demonstrated his ability, he is highly respected by a constantly growing circle of friends and acquaintances.
