THOMAS J. QUALLEY.
Thomas J. Qualley is successfully engaged in business in Decorah as a dealer in automobiles, in partnership with C. S. Marsh, and has a well appointed garage in the Marsh building on West Water street. In early manhood he was actively identified with agricultural pursuits in Winneshiek county and prior to embark- ing in his present business held the office of sheriff for a number of years. His birth occurred in Decorah township, this county, on the 5th of March, 1866. his parents being J. T. and Julia ( Egge) Qualley, both of whom were natives of Norway. In about 1853 the father emigrated to the United States, came direct

to Winneshiek county, Iowa, and purchased land in Decorah township, clear- ing and improving the property and being successfully engaged in its cultiva- tion until the time of his retirement in 1893. He now makes his home with our subject and is well and favorably known in the community where he settled six decades ago. His wife was called to her final rest October 19, 1910.
Thomas J. Qualley was here reared and educated, first attending the district schools and later pursuing a course of study in the Decorah Institute. He as- sisted his father in the operation of the home farm until the latter's retirement and in 1896 purchased the property, comprising two hundred acres, devoting his time and attention to its further cultivation and improvement until 1906. In that year he was elected sheriff of Winneshiek county and served until January, 1913, making a highly creditable and commendable record in that connection. On the Ist of March, 1913, in partnership with C. S. Marsh, he embarked in the auto- mobile business and has since handled the Velie Maxwell, Page-Detroit and Ford (Tinner's Dream) cars. The firm also does a general repair business and has already built up a gratifying patronage.
On May 27, 1896, Mr. Qualley was united in marriage to Miss Lena Barlow, her parents being Swen and Anna Barlow, who are mentioned at greater length on another page of this work in connection with the sketch of Martin C. Bergan, brother-in-law of Mrs. Qualley. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Qualley have been born seven children, as follows: Arthur Roy, a youth of fifteen; Rudolph V., who is thirteen years old: Norman L., Loraine and Madrine, who are twelve, ten and seven years of age respectively : Janice, a little maiden of four years ; and John, who died in 1898. The family home, owned by Mr. Qualley, is a handsome residence at the corner of Maple avenue and Pearl street.
Mr. Qualley exercises his right of franchise in support of the men and meas- ures of the republican party, while his religious faith is indicated by his mem- bership in the Lutheran church. He also belongs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Norske Selskab Club. A lifelong resident of Winneshiek county, he has become well known here and his is a creditable business and offi- cial record.
ARTHUR P. CURTIS.
Arthur P. Curtis, carrying on general farming and stock-raising upon a fine property of one hundred and thirteen acres on section 5, Orleans township, and owning also a fine eighty acre tract of land in Fremont township, was born in Fair- field county, Connecticut. November 3. 1861. He is a son of Smith and Frances J. (Jones) Curtis, the former born in Connecticut and the latter in New York. The parents came to Iowa in 1865 and settled first in Ossian, whence they moved to Bluffton township. At the end of two years they took up their residence in Fremont township and the father engaged in general farming there until his death, which occurred in May, 1901. His wife survives him and makes her home in Cresco. To their union were born six children: Arthur P., of this re- view ; Harry, who has passed away ; Ward, of Orleans township: Mary D., who

died in infancy : Gertrude, deceased; and Charles A., who is operating the old homestead in Fremont township.
Arthur P. Curtis was four years of age when he came with his parents to Iowa. He grew up on his father's farm in Fremont township and acquired his education in the district schools. At the age of twenty he left home and after working as a farm hand for eight months went to New York city, where he spent six years in the trucking business, later turning his attention to dealing in ice and continuing in this occupation for eleven years thereafter. At the end of that time he returned to Iowa and purchased a farm of one hundred and thirteen acres on section 5, Orleans township, this county. Upon this property he has since resided and he has carried forward its development along modern and practical lines, improving it with a fine two-story residence, a silo with a capacity of one hun- dred and sixty tons and substantial barns and outbuildings. Success has steadily rewarded his well directed efforts and his general farming and stock-raising inter- ests are today extensive. In addition to his homestead Mr. Curtis owns also an eighty acre tract in Fremont township.
On the Ist of September, 1885, Mr. Curtis was united in marriage to Miss Florence Faucher, a native of New York, and to their union were born five chil- dren: L. A., who lives at home; Gertrude L., also with her parents; Warren, who died in childhood; Frank, who is attending agricultural college in Cresco; and Clarence, who was born December 14, 1902.
Mr. Curtis is a member of the Methodist church and is connected fraternally with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. the Rebekahs and the Royal Arcanum. He is a republican in his political beliefs and has served on the school board, where his work proved intelligent, able and public-spirited. He is classed with the progressive farmers and successful business men of his locality and is well known here, where his genuine personal worth has gained him many friends.
