COMRADE BURNAP.

Comrade Burnap responded to

"OUR COMRADES'

as follows:

Mr. President and Comrades.

I feel that fitting response to this toast demands powers of expression beyond my control, and should any feel thit I inil to do the subject justice, I can assure them that their dissatisfaction will be no greater than my own.

A toast to all comrades, we found brave and true, 'That long watched at our side, and that joked their way this' The camp, and the field, the march and the fight, That our flag should prevail an I that right should be right.

To all who shared blankets a .d mess night and morn, AA ud who forazed for chickens white we went for corn, And fooled the first sergeant by answering "Here !" Oft for us, when at 'Roll-call" we failed to appear.

That rode by our side on that Farmington day, And out Booneville and Oxford and Pontofor way, And Westpoint and Guntown and Coffeetown, too, And at Nashville, with shout, dashed the Rebel fort through

Yes, a toast to all comrades, both here and away, Those who still are alive or who quiety lay In loved, cared-for grave, or in battle trench thrown, Where the Spanish moss waves to the Southern wind's moan. . Here's joy to all present. Here's long life and health, And here's peace and success; here's position and wealth. May your troubles grow less and your pleasures grow more, "T'il "Assembly" shall blow on the opposite shore.

A question arose in the minds of some as to whether the comrades would al! attend our next reunion at Mason City, thinking perhap; the World's Fair at Chicago in 1893 would lessen the attend ince at our reunion

An expression was taken, and it was unanimously voted that every member would make every effort in his power to answer to roll call at Mason City, Iowa, on the first Wednesday and Thursday in October, 1893.

B. A. BEESON.

Comrade B. A. Beeson, the newly elected President, came forward and said: Mr. Chairman and Comrades.

In accepting the honor you have conferred upon me, I do it with no little hes- itancy. This association has been presided over by President Egbert, President Horton, President Rumple and President Wagner. All of their meetings have been the most decided successes. We go away from this one just as we have gone from every other meeting, the best meeting we ever had It is in your power to make the next meeting a better meeting than this one, and by your assistance and my own endeavors, I intend that it shall be.

I will not detain you five minutes thanking you. Your attention during the entire meeting has been directed toward the flag I want to wind it up with one sentiment, il Len get language to express it At the military academies of the

47

FIFTH REUNION OF SECOND IOWA CAVALRY.

United States the cadets are required to salute the flag whenever they pass it. This should be done everywhere [Applause. ] until the outward sign shall become but the spontaneous act of an inward love for that old flag. symbolical of the nation's glory, that will perinit the free air of America to caress no other flag than the one on which the eyes of our dying heroes last rested, as they closed forever.

If the Glee Club will favor us with "Sweet By and By" I will leave these sentiments with you to reflect upon

The Association was then dismissed, to meet again on the morning of the first Wednesday in October, 1893, at Mason City, lowa.
