Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6

How many good things we could truthfully say of our comrade ! A. God fearing man, kindly affectionate and true to his friends, pure and sweet in his domestic life, he was a type of the highest character of American citizens who. a generation ago. took up arms at their country's call.

After he was mustered out. he went to Tennessee, resumed the practice of law, and from 1867 to the date of his death, with the excep- tion of a year and a half passed in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was a citizen of Chattanooga. Such, briefly, is the history of a very unusual man.

It is difficult to speak in fit terms of Major Marshall without the danger of being charged by those unacquainted with him, with exagger- ating his merits and ability.

He was the soul of honor, and his integrity was absolutely spotless. No one ever accused him of a dishonorable act, or capable of harboring a dishonorable thought. His word no one ever disputed. While retiring in his disposition, never pushing himself forward, those who knew him well, knew that he was possessed of a courage that never faltered or flinched in time of danger. While a man of very decided views, political or otherwise, never conceding them, he possessed unfailing tact, and made no enemies. Every one was ready to speak well of Major Marshall. and there was no period of his life calling for an apology.

He was a man of very unusual ability. Possessing a mind clear, dis- criminating. and analytical. few lawyers are better equipped in their profession than he; and there were few lawyers whose legal opinions were entitled to and did receive more respect than his.

In 1868 he married a Miss Bryant of Independence, Iowa. She lived but a few months. In 1873 he married Miss Kate S. Montague, of Chat- tanooga. who survives him.

Such is a brief epitome of the life of our comrade. Even from this it will be readily seen that his life was no ordinary life. But we that knew him so well in the camp. on the march, in the strife of battle, and in the social walks of life, knew that Major W. S. Marshall was no ordinary man.

ARRANGED BY THE SECRETARY.

.

W. H. DARROW. ASSISTANT SURGEON.

27

WILLIAM H. DARROW was born in Summit Co .. Ohio, on the 17th day of August, 1838. His father moved to Louisa Co., Iowa, when he was eight years of age. His time until his sixteenth year was employed in assisting his father at his occupation of blacksmith, and in a desult- ory attendance at the village school. At the age of sixteen years he entered the drug store of Dr. Wm. H. Colton at Columbus City. In 1860 he attended medical lectures at Keokuk, Iowa, and upon returning to his home with his diploma in his pocket, formed his plans for a peaceful life at his chosen profession; frustrated by the threatened disruption of the country. He at once with characteristic impulsiveness enlisted as a private in Captain J. L. Grubb's Co., then being recruited in his native town. The company was bivouaced at Camp Warren near Burlington,. Iowa, and on the 16th day of July, 1861, was sworn into the service of the United States as Company C, of the Fifth Iowa Infantry Volunteers.

Dr. Darrow's training as a druggist and physician, together with his kindly and sympathetic nature, soon secured for him a place among his sick comrades, and on September 15th, 1861, he was made hospital steward. In April, 1862, he was promoted to additional assistant sur- geon, and in September, 1862, was promoted to assistant surgeon, which position he filled with marked ability and satisfaction to his comrades un- til his discharge from the service on the 24th day of September, 1964.

Dr. Darrow was wounded by a gun shot at Jackson, Mississippi, and was stunned by a cannon shot at Champion's Hill. The latter in- jury seriously affecting his nervous system during the balance of his life. His death occurred at Columbus Junction, lowa, on the 15th day of July, 1894. His funeral was under the auspices of the G. A. R., and at his request (made several months previous), a comrade of the Fifth delivered a short eulogy over his remains.

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL EZEKIEL S. SAMPSON was born in Huron connty. Ohio, December 6th. 1831. and came to Keokuk county, Iowa, in 1843. His education was obtained at the public schools and some. three years attendance at the high school of Professor Howe at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and one year at Knox College. Galesburg, Illinois. He studied law at Oskaloosa in the office of Eastburn & Rice and commenced the practice in Sigourney in 1856. He was prosecuting attorney of Keokuk county for two years. He volunteered in April, 1861, but was not mus- tered into the service until in July, when he became captain of Co. F. Fifth Iowa, which position he held until September, 1862, when he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel, which rank he held when mustered out in September, 1864. After the war he resumed the prac- tice of the law at Sigourney, Iowa, where he resided until his death which occurred upon the 7th day of October, 1802. In the meantime he had been a member of the State Senate. and from January 1st. 1867, until January 1st, 1875, was district judge of the Sixth Judicial District. He was member of the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses retiring on March 1st, 1879. From that time until his death he was engaged in the practice of the law in Sigourney. Iowa. He left surviving him his wid- ow, Eunice E. Sampson, and seven children, all of whom are still living.
