FOREWORD
A college does not exist exclusively for its undergraduates, for the four years of work offered in its curriculum. Special attention should be given to means of continuing the interest of all who have ever been her students, both graduates and non-graduates, for making a real Alma Mater, a home center for all of her children throughout their lives. As a factor to this end Franklin College has decided to devote one number of its Bulletin each year to alumni affairs. This first number con- tains the plan of the new organization of the Alumni Associa- tion, and so far as we have been able to secure the data, a brief record of all graduates. No complete catalog has hitherto been issued and the college records are not complete. The work of the present issue has therefore involved a great amount of cor- respondence, and owing to the fact that we are unable to get
any response from a considerable number we have been obliged to insert the names without any record. In such cases we have given in parenthesis the last address obtainable and marked rec. inc. (record incomplete) after it. Kindly help us to fill out these blanks for our next general catalog and for our permanent college records. Any information concerning de- ceased alumni, or the names of friends who could give such information will be welcome. We have gathered a consider- able amount of data concerning non-graduates, but it will re- quire another year to make anything like a satisfactory showing, so we have omitted them entirely from this issue. Please help us in this also. Many errors will probably be found in this copy. We ask your indulgence and look to you for corrections. Will you kindly keep us informed also of any additions to your own personal records, change of address, etc. We are now prepared to enter all such data in the permanent college records in an easily accessible form for future reference. The value of these records will depend upon completeness to date.

To the Alumni, Officers and Former Students and Officers, of Franklin College:
At the annual meeting of the alumni association of Frank- lin College, held at Franklin, Ind., June 15, 1910, the under- signed committee was appointed "with power to act" to revise the Constitution and By-Laws of the association, with a view of securing a more efficient form of organization and a greater degree of co-operation between the alumni and the college. With this purpose in mind your committee has carefully and painstakingly revised the Constitution and By-Laws which are printed herewith. Many important and radical changes have been made, but not a single one was adopted without the most careful thought and consideration. Consultations have been had with the officers of other alumni associations and institu- tions, with the officials of our own college and association, and with those best acquainted with their peculiar needs and pos- sibilities, and the enclosed instrument is the product of this work. So far it has received the approval of every alumnus to whom it has been presented, and your committee, by virtue of the power delegated to it by the association, have therefore this day, declared it to be adopted and in force as the Constitution and By-Laws of the Franklin College alumni association.
There are several features that may perhaps need ex- planation. The widening of the eligibility to membership, was done with the one idea of extending the opportunities of mem- bership to all those whose previous connection with the college had enlisted their interest in its behalf. By allowing half a vote to associate members they have a voice and interest in the affairs of the association, but without endangering its ulti- mate control by the regular members.
To place the association and the management of its affairs in the control of all members, absent and present, and to enlist their interest and support in all its various interests, was the purpose of your committee in adopting the referendum plan for the nomination and election of officers, and for the transaction

of important business. The provisions that the secretary, treasur- er and alumni day committee shall all be residents of Franklin were necessary to insure the best performance of their respec- tive functions, while making the president of Franklin College a member of the executive committee was to insure a closer co-operation between our Alma Mater and our alumni.
There seemed ample reason to justify the increase in the annual dues from fifty cents to one dollar. Such is the average of the dues in other associations, where the subscription to the college paper is not included. The main reason for making this increase is to make possible the provisions of the By-Laws giving every member a free subscription to The Franklin, dur- ing the period of his membership. Your committee considered this of the utmost importance in order to encourage the splen- did efforts of the student body to publish a high class weekly paper and to keep the alumni in closer touch with the "old Col- lege on the Hill." The subscription price of The Franklin is one dollar, while the same amount paid into the association will secure a year's membership and a free subscription to The Franklin. The paper will contain articles of interest by alumni, faculty and others, besides giving all the official announcements of the president and the general news of the college. The pur- pose of providing for life memberships was to secure a greater degree of financial solidarity for the association. A large num- ber of life members would make the management of the fi- nances much easier, would insure the permanency of a large circulation of The Franklin, and increase the general efficiency of the organization. (Where alumni have already subscribed for The Franklin for the present year, they will be credited with membership for the fiscal year. This arrangement is made for the present year only.)
But no constitution, however skillfully devised, can alone secure success. There must be back of it the genuine devotion and enthusiasm of a loyal constituency, and its success must depend upon a keen realization of personal responsibility. Franklin still stands for the same ideals of life and character for which its pioneer founder fought over seventy years ago; her life is still dominated by the same resistless spirit; and our plea is that this spirit be nourished, that its beneficent influence
7
ALUMNI BULLETIN
be extended to wider areas and to greater achievement by the loyalty, the sympathy and the co-operation of every alumnus and friend who has felt the thrill of its dynamic power and whose heart is stirred with an affectionate gratitude to his Alma Mater. Several hundred new members would give a tremendous impetus to the movement, the far reaching results of which can hardly be measured. Your committee feels that the importance of an immediate response, can scarcely be over estimated and expresses the desires and hope that this appeal meet with the enthusiastic support and approval of the former students, the officers, and the alumni of our Alma Mater.
