INTRODUCTORY.
In the preparation of this City Directory we have spared neither time nor pains to secure exact information on all the subjects treated. But a work like a directory, made up as it is of many little items of information, is peculiar_ ly susceptible to error, in spite of the greatest care.
A house to house canvass was made by the compilers to every part of the city, and such questions asked as should have elicited full and accurate statistics concerning every family and individual. We have conscientiously endeavored to prepare for Bluffton a directory that will not only be a credit to the com- pilers, but to our enterprising and beautiful city.
Under the head of "New Names and Corrections" on page 180 will be found a list of changes so far as we were able to obtain them which were occasioned by removals and new comers after the body of the work was printed together with a few errors discovered as the work progressed.
We invite our patrons to examine all departments of the book, as we be- lieve they will find many items of useful information not found in any other published form.
We desire to thank our many patrons and all others who have given us help and encouragement in the enterprise.
WILL B. GUTELIUS P. A. ALLEN.

STREET DIRECTORY.
System of Numbering Houses.
The system of numbering is what is known as the Philadelphia system, which establishes base lines, running east and west and north and south, and all houses are numbered in the several directions from these base lines, each block counting one hundred in mimbering in any direction.
We take first Main street, running north and south, as a base line for num- bering east and west, and Market street, running east and west, as a base line for numbering north and south.
All points east of Main street, on any of the several streets are known as east, and all points west of Main are known as west : any point north of Market street on the several streets is known as north, and any point south of Market street on any of the several streets, is known as south, regardless of whatever the number may be on any of the several streets. For instance, the Baptist. church is located at the corner of South Johnson and West Cherry streets. Even numbers are placed on the south side and odd numbers on the north side of the east and west streets, and even numbers are placed on the west and odd numbers on the east side of the north streets and south streets.
Taking the public square as the basing point, the streets of the city are located from this point.
