BRAZIL BEST KNOWN FOR COAL AND CLAY

Brazil, the county seat of Clay County in the Central Western part of Indiana, is noted chiefly for its large production of Brazil Block Coal and for the excellence of its heavy clay products.

A type of structural clay tile with faces glazed in a variety of beautiful colors, was originated in

1

Brazil and is known to architects in every city. This beautiful structural tile has been widely used in schools, hospitals and public buildings through- out the country, and according to experts, has no equal anywhere in the world.

Clay conduit, for underground electric construc- tion, is made in vast quantities in Brazil and is shipped all over the world. The clay plants of Brazil also make excellent glazed brick, hollow brick, building tile, fireproofiing tile, silo tile, filter bed tile, paving brick and sewer pipe.

Brazil Block Coal.

Brazil Block Coal is found in two veins known as the upper and the lower vein. As far as analysis is concerned there is very little difference in the coal of the two veins. The following would ap- proximate the average analysis of these coals :

Moisture 10%

Volatile matter

35%

Fixed carbon

50%

Ash 4 to 5%

Sulphur .under 1%

B.T.U .- 14,000 to 14,200, dry basis Fusing temperature-2,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition to the Brazil Block Coal there are a few important deposits of what are known as Minshall (Vein and Third Vein Coal, which differ from Brazil Block Coal in both structure and ana- lysis but which are widely sold.

Many large stripping mines and some shaft mines, are operated within a radius of ten miles of Brazil and produce a large tonnage of this high grade fuel. Some of these mines have concrete drives and the most modern equipment for grading and preparing coal as well as to facilitate the load- ing of coal on trucks. Quite a number specialize on truck coal business.

Good Labor Supply.

Brazil's population is all American with a very high percentage of home owners. There is a good supply of both skilled and unskilled labor, with a record of practically no labor disturbances.

Brazil homes are situated on shady, well-paved

streets. The business district, is chiefly on the National Highway, (Route 40) and is clean, smooth- ly paved, and well lighted.

Educational and recreation facilities in Brazil are unusually good. The public school system in- cludes a new Senior High School building, an In- dustrial Arts and Gymnasium building with an auditorium seating 4,000 people, and six modern grade school buildings.

A well-equipped public library is located in the downtown section.

Recreation Facilities.

The Y.M.C.A. building, in charge of a competent and progressive secretary, is the headquarters for many interesting and useful community activities.

A municipal stadium, 450 feet square, was com- pleted in 1934. This is located in Forest Park and is equipped with the most modern lighting system for night use. Another modern athletic field is lo- cated adjacent to the Senior High School building.

3

Brazil has two theaters in the downtown dis- trict.

The Clay County Courthouse, located at Nation- al Ave. and Alabama St., has a small auditorium available for meetings of public interest. The Courthouse also shelters a museum of early settler's relics, zoological and botanical specimens of this region and many historical documents and souve- nirs. This interesting museum is open to the public.

The Brazil Country Club, just beyond the south- ern corporation line, has a well-kept nine-hole golf course.

Brazil has three well-appointed clubhouses. A modern Masonic Temple stands at Walnut and Church Sts. The Elk's Club is located on Sherfey St., just south of National Ave. The Eagles Club is at the corner of National and Forest Aves.

Shipping Facilities.

Shipping and transportation facilities are excel- lent in Brazil. It is served by the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad and by branch lines of the B. & O. and C. & E. I. Railroads. The Indiana Electric Railroad, from Terre Haute to Indianapol- is runs through Brazil and there are also rapid truck and bus lines both east and west over the National Highway.

A progressive daily newspaper, serving a shop- ping area of more than 22,000 people, keeps Brazil abreast of national and world events.

Mineral Resources.

Extensive deposits of valuable clay, shale and coal underlie much of the land in the vicinity of Brazil. Much of this area is undeveloped. Informa- tion on available tracts of coal and clay land may be obtained through the Brazil Chamber of Com- merce. The Chamber also has a list of desirable factory sites, suitable for a wide variety of indus- tries.

The membership of the Chamber of Commerce includes the leading business and professional men and women of the community. Any detailed infor- mation about Brazil and Clay County, its resources and business, may be obtained through the offices of the Chamber, at 32 E. National Ave.
