PREFACE

T 'N presenting to the Citizens and Business Men of Valparaiso and Porter county the fifth vol- ume of our Directory, we congratulate them on the growth and prosperity of both City and Coun- ty. That part of the Directory devoted to the City of Valparaiso shows a population of 8,955. These figures do not include the students at the univer- sity, adding the average attendance of that institu- tion of 3,000, there are 11,955 people residing in Valparaiso. The following towns and villages and their population are: Hebron 1,130; Chesterton 1,715; Kouts 612; Boone Grove 158; Burdick 79; Crisman 135; Crocker 140; Furnessville 117; Hurl- but 111; Woodville 90; Wheeler 230; Suman 129; Porter 585; Malden 50; McCool 81. Rural routes 6,552, making Porter county population 20,869.

We have used great care and diligence in procur- ing information and we think the public will find this book as correct and reliable as it is possible to make a work of this kind.

If nothing prevents we will publish our sixth issue in 1913. We tender our thanks to the busi- ness and professional men of the city and county for their liberal patronage; also we heartily appre- ciate the courtesy and support that has been given the Directory by the newspapers of the county which have been of much assistance to us.

In closing this brief introduction, we warn you to beware of Directory borrowers and thieves.
