· 246 ACRES of wooded hills and dales compi the Butler university campus. Experts have tern it the most beautiful large city campus in the Uni States. The canal. long an Indianapolis landma with its picturesque towpath and graceful curves len scenic beauty to the university grounds. The fori gardens, constructed years ago when the campus 1 Fairview park, provide a delightful setting for o air pageantry and gatherings.
· SUMMER SCHOOL facilities are unrivaled at Butler with the woods and trees to bring relief from the heat. Picnics and informal gatherings are always in order during warm weather when a secluded spot is ever available under the overhanging branches of a native tree.
CAMPUS LIFE is never at a low ebb at Butler. There is always something for the energetic student to do. Homecoming is the gala nt of the fall semester. Here we have scenes from the traditional freshman-sophomore flag rush which is usually a greasy, grimy affair with every- 697267 one having a good time. Fra- ternity and so- rority house dec- orations and the annual alumni dinner are other interesting feat- ures of Home- coming pictured in the layout at the left. Ad- ditional events of an extra-cur- ricular nature which interest the students are the annual Geneva Stunts. the all- campus sing, pep meetings for the athletic games. serenades and the Fairview Follies, all school revue.
· CHAPEL ex- ercises are held twice weekly with freshmen and seniors at- tending each Tuesday and juniors and sophomores on Thursday.
Under the di- rection of the faculty chapel committee, prominent speakers, musicians and dramatists appear before the student body. The science lecture room (pictured above) seats more th 300 persons and is the center for chapel and special convocation programs. The students assemble in the university gymnasium wh all-school chapels are held. It is customary to bring the student body together in this manner three or four times each semester.
Besides being of practical value to the student who attends as a spectator, the chapel programs are invaluable as a training grou for student musicians and actors who desire experience in performing before the public.
EARNING TO COOK is only one of the many valuable courses for coeds in the department of home economics. Sewing, dietetics, Id care, home decoration and costume designing are to be found on the curriculum of this department whose purpose is to produce ne makers and expert teachers of home economics. Modern kitchen equipment, a model dining room, foods laboratory. costume fitting room and sewing laboratory are available for students in the household arts. Since the prob- lems of home and community life are consid- ered as subjects of general edu- cation. an effort is made to have the student view the problem of housekeeping as a business regu- lated by eco- nomic laws. 1

· LABORATORY SCIENCES demand the attention of almost every student at some time during his col- lege career. Botany, physics, chemistry and zoology are offered with interesting seminars and field trips for students majoring in these subjects. Departmental clubs and societies offer social outlets for student groups joined together by their mutual interest in science. Professional courses are available for those desiring to enter medicine, teaching or research work.

· MODERN EQUIPMENT is to be found in Butler laboratories. When the university was mov to its new campus in 1928 only furnishings of t latest design were installed in the science building Arthur Jordan Memorial Hall.

· A SPEECH CLINIC is one of the many interesting activities in progress dur- ing the school year at Butler. Students of speech correction use the clinic as a laboratory from which valuable experience is obtained. Others with speech defects receive free treatment for such ailments as nasality, stuttering, incorrect breathing, faulty enunciation and articulation.

· THE HEALTH of every student re- ceives the assiduous attention of a full-time university nurse and phy- sician. Each year all students must pass a medical examination for the detection of remedial diseases.
· BASKETBALL, football and track are the major sport at Butler. A national championship in 1929 and Missouri Valley Conference championship in 1933 ar recent honors annexed by Bulldog net teams. On th gridiron Butler has always been considered formidable Win or lose, the Bulldogs live up to their name by dis playing "plenty of fight."
. THE BUTLER FIELDHOUSE is annually the scene of the Butler indoor relays. Track stars from major uni . versities over the nation assemble for the meet. Lovers of athletics from Indianapolis and environs attend the relays which are destined to become one of the greatest track and field events of the Middle West. The swimming pool, tennis and handball courts, golf driv- ing nets, ping pong tables and other sport equipment are to be found in the fieldhouse. It is the scene, an- nually, of the state high school basketball tournament.
MAY DAY is one of the most colorful events of the ar at Butler. Elaborate pageantry, presented usually approximately one hundred students, the traditional owning of the May Queen and the natural beauty of e campus contribute to the charm of this occasion. ay Day has been an annual custom at Butler for sev- al years. The event is sponsored each year by the embers of the Butler Women's League.
· INTRAMURAL SPORTS are gaining in popularity at Butler. Fraternities, various departmental organ- izations and special groups participate. The uni- versity offers trophies in a series of ten sports. Rivalry is keen and games are hard fought in order to receive the coveted awards from the hands of the intramural director at the close of the school year. While the student is interested in "winning the game," the uni- versity is interested in building sound bodies. Both purposes are served by intramural sports.
·INTERCOLLE- GIATE DEBAT- ING annually demands the at- tention of a large number of devo- tees at Butler. The two varsity squads of the uni- versity are usual- ly selected from majors in the department of speech.
However, all students interest - ed are urged to compete for places on the two teams. Member- ship in Tau Kappa Alpha, national debating fraternity which was founded at Butler in 1908, goes to outstanding performers on th squads. Many phases of political and social problems confront the debaters as they prepare for their schedules. thus presenting practic: benefits to those who participate.

Those of outstanding ability are selected to perform in the major productions which are produced each semester. When a student hows marked ability and interest in dramatics he is elected to membership in Thespis. If he continues to improve, and his academic tanding is satisfactory, he is honored by election to National Collegiate Players, outstanding college dramatic society. Theaters and arious show houses in Indianapolis are additional laboratories for the Butler dramatic student. Each year persons enrolled in the uni- ersity are cast in the productions of the Indianapolis Civic theater.
. RADIO BROADCASTING is one of the frequent activities of dramatic students. The two Indianapolis stations, WKBF al WFBM are generous in permitting student skits and excerpts from Thespis productions to be presented from their studios during 1 school year. In 1932 Butler students presenting the play, "Storm Before Sunset," were named winners of the interstate university rac contest at Chicago.

Inspec- tion of large industries and business houses so that students of commerce may get first hand information on the making and merchandising of various products. is the purpose of these journeys. · EDITING THE COLLEGIAN is one of the practical experiences offered by the department of journalism. Every student who recei a degree in journalism must spend a prescribed amount of time collecting data, writing stories, copy editing and making up a page layo for the university paper as a part of his laboratory experience. Theories taught in the classroom are practiced on the Collegian. Facu members supervise the editing of the paper, giving valuable aids and criticisms as the paper is in the making.
