INTRODUCTORY.
5000569
IS with a feeling of gratification that we present this, our first, directory of the City of Portland to our patrons. We feel that the volume is as near complete and correct as it is possible to make a work of this kind, as omissions and errors are bound to creep in such a vast undertaking as gathering and compiling all the names and addresses of a city the size of Portland. As only about one-half the houses of the city are numbered, the addresses have been given as near as possible. As will be seen, the names of heads of families and all children of school age have been given, the letter "s" after a name indicating school.
Compared with the last directory of Portland, this one shows a large increase in population, and a much greater interest taken in the work by the business men of the city in taking advertising space. The canvass shows the population of Portland as 6,143, an increase over the 1890 census of near two thousand, which is evidence enough that the City of Portland, while not a "boom" town, is gradually forging to the front as one of the solidest little cities of the state.
We desire to extend our thanks for the liberal encouragement given this work by the citizens of Portland, and assure them that nothing has been slighted by the publishers in making the directory valuable to everybody.
