BLUFFTON, INDIANA, CONTAINING

The Names, Addresses and Occupations of all Residents Over Sixteen Years of Age,

TOGETHER WITH

A Complete Business and Professional Directory, Lodge Di- rectory and Other Information of a Miscellaneous Nature.

COMPILED IN MAY, 1900. |$> O. T. FRASH, HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA.

INTRODUCTION.

In the publication of a directory for the city of Bluffton the publisher of this volume has no desire to defend himself against any criticism of same in any of its parts. From a more or less extensive knowledge of the public benefits derived from such a book and the labor and expense incidental to its publication as offset by the support it should have received. I am led to re- mark that the book is certainly as good as the business men of Bluffton have paid for and as far as merit is concerned it would have been hard even with more liberal patronage to have produced a better one. Of course errors and inaccuracies will be found in this a- in any other book of a similar nature but on the whole the addresses and other information herein compiled may be accepted as correct without further question for a period of two years at the expiration of which time some other directory compiler may undertake to publish another volume. The opportunity is hereby taken to sincerely thank those who have contributed to the success of this work by their patronage and to urge upon those who have not a more liberal policy toward the next compiler.

Respectfully. THE PUBLISHER.

The Evening news. NINTH YEAR. Circulation 825.

The news is recognized as the People's Paper in Bluffton. It goes into 650 homes of the city. Its local matter is unprejudiced, fair and reliable. It's advertising rates are low and within the reach of all. Its want column is a money-maker, and will get you anything under the sun.

The mews gives all the local news. It works for Bluff- ton's interests all the time, and helps to move "The Asphalt City" in right channels. Believ- ing that this is the best city on earth, and its citizens built on the same plan, it also has the idea that

The Mews is a mighty good example of a good daily paper in a good town. Especial attention given to society printing, invitations, programs, calling cards (printed or engraved) of anything for so- cial events. A tine job office in connection with The Mews plant where good work is done at fair prices. Don't call if you want cheap work at a cheap price. The output of this department is based upon the principle of a dollar's worth for a dol- lar. It will be good, upon good material and at a price that will convince you that it is reasonable.

The City of Bluffton.

As a location for schools there is perhaps no better city in all the great Northwest than Bluffton. It is known as "The Asphalt City" because of its magnificent distances of shaded asphalt drives, lined with imposing business blocks and elegant and costly residences. Situated on the edge of the great Indiana gas and oil field, this city receives all the substantial benefits of the immense oil operations carried on in this part of the state, at the same time avoiding the un- pleasant features that attend a too close proximity to the tield.

The city is easily accessible from all directions and its excellent railroad facilities will be enhanced this summer by the construction of two new inter-urban electric lines. Bluffton is a hospitable city, with many churches of all de- nominations, a fine library, literary societies and clubs and the student is thus surrounded with all the refining influ- ences that can be desired.

Our School Thome.

Our school building, located in the heart of the busi- ness portion of the city and but tive minutes walk from any of the railroad depots, is one of the largest and most sub- stantial in the city and was but recently remodeled for this institution. The rooms are all large, with high ceilings, and provided with good fresh air and natural light. The rooms are accompanied with a long and spacious hall, ladies' and gentlemen's lavatories and good, healthful drinking water. The school is furnished throughout with new and modern furniture, built especially for the comfort and convenience of students.

Our Instructors.

It is a rule of this institution to employ only compe- tent instructors, those who, together with a complete mastery of theories have had practical experience in their several lines. In no department does the instructor attempt to teach the student to do something he cannot do himself. M. H. Ormsby and F. M. Rhinehart, instructors in the Shorthand Department are the official Court Reporters of the 28th Indi- ana Judicial Circuit and teach in the school the same system used in their Court work. Miss Bertaline Mason is a grad- uate in the Shorthand Department of the school, has supple-

mented her theoretical training with commercial and legal work and is a member of The National Shorthand Teacher's Association. N. B. MePherson, principal of the Bookkeeping and Banking Department, has had twenty-five years exper- ience as bookkeeper and expert accountant and in that capac- ity has served three of the largest concerns of their kind in the world. G. C. Blue, instructor in penmanship, is a graduate under one of the best instructors in the U. S. and has had several years experience as teacher of the art. Prof. W. H. Kelley, A. B. instructor in Grammar, History and Lit- erature, is a graduate of Indiana University and for six years has been principal of the Bluffton High School, while Prof. M. L. Fisher, instructor in Mathematics and Sciences has had a course of two years in Purdue University and for eight years has been a teacher in the public schools of the State, and is now principal of the Central Schools of this city.

. The Shorthand Course.

The course is divided into three terms of eight weeks each, though these terms may be made longer or shorter, as the work of the student necessitates. A successful amanuen- sis now-a-days must be more than a mere writer of short- hand and operator of the typewriter, and it is the aim of the school to equip students for their work in the most thorough manner. With this end in view, students in shorthand are required either to take the auxiliary studies mentioned below
