INTRODUCTORY
The compiler of this little book takes great pleasure in present- ing to the public this, his fourth effort in the directory line in Hartford City. He also ventures to hope that the patrons of the directory will gaze with an indulgent eye on the unavoidable errors and trusts that they will commend those features which tend to make it valuable as a reference to the people of Hartford City. Since the publication of the 1902-'03 directory Hartford City has taken several important strides in the way of public improvements which deserve more than a passing mention. The interurban railway system which makes rapid and convenient transit possible between Hartford City and the cities on the line between Muncie and Bluffton has proved to be of untold value to our enterprising city. An army of workmen are now engaged in the task of transforming that erst- while eyesore, the muddy block streets, into a beautiful expanse of brick pavement, which, when completed, will be the pride of the city and will add many thousands of dollars to the value of residence and business property. The handsome public library erected on North High Street is another step on the ladder of advancement and the magnificent new school buildings now being erected on the site of the structure lately destroyed by fire is another monument to the spirit of enterprise which inspires the greater number of our public spirited citizens. The formation of a Commercial Club composed of the representative citizens of Hartford City and the manner in which they put their shoulders to the wheel and inaugurated an active campaign looking to the betterment of trade conditions in Hartford City is undoubtedly the nest egg of prosperity and unless all signs fail there will be no such word as "hard times" in Hartford City during the next two years. In point of population the city has made a sub- stantial gain in the past two years. A careful estimate, based on the number of names contained in this book, indicates that Hartford City has a population of about 9,000. In conclusion I desire to thank those who lent their assistance in the compilation of this book and the business men whose liberal patronage made the venture success- ful from a financial standpoint.
Respectfully,
THE PUBLISHER.
