INTRODUCTORY

In presenting this, the first issue of our complete Wells County Directory, we feel assured that the work has been compiled and arranged in such a care- ful and thorough manner as to be accorded the commendation of all, and that it will prove an almost indispensable volume to private citizens, as well as to the business and professional men.

We appreciate the impossibility of entirely eliminating all inaccuracies, but have spared no pains to secure the fullest and most accurate information in the compiliation of this book.

The patronage and support extended us, as well as the courtesies shown our solicitors, are heartily appreciated.

STREET DIRECTORY

SYSTEM OF NUMBERING HOUSES.

The system of numbering is what is known as the Philadelphia system, which establishes base lines, running east and west and north and south, and all houses are numbered in the several directions from these base lines, each block containing one hundred in numbering in any direction.

We take first Main street, running north and south, as a base line for num- bering east and west, and Market street, running east and west, as a base line for numbering north and south.

All points east of Main street, on any of the several streets are known as east, and all points west of Main are known as west; any point north of Mar- ket street on the several streets is known as north, and any point south of Market street on any of the several streets, is known as south, regardless of whatever the number may be on any of the several streets. For instance, the Baptist church is located at the corner of South Johnson and West Cherry streets. Even numbers are placed on the south side and odd numbers on the north side of the east and west streets, and even numbers are placed on the west and odd numbers on the east side of the north streets and south streets.
