LAKE JAMES

Located near Angola, Steuben County, Northeastern section of the State, is the largest Lake in the county and fourth in size in the State. Lake James has a shore line of 32 miles, and is 7 miles long. It is known as the "Playground of Indiana." People from many States make this their place of residence for the summer and this lake has all the known summer sports, dancing, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, golfing, motor boating and tennis.

Among the various kinds of fish to be caught in Lake James are bluegills, pick- erel, perch and bass. There are many modern cottages for rent, modern hotels, camp sites and rooms are to be found with rates that are reasonable.

The fun spot of the lake is Bledsoes Beach with a cool pavilion for dancing with the best bands, with outdoor or indoor table service. Here gay crowds mingle each evening. Bledsoe's Beach with its natural fresh water and white sand bottom make it an ideal place for children. It has play devices and life guard service for their patrons. Inside will be found a general store with a fresh supply of groceries, and meats, with a large fountain and a curio shop displaying souvenirs of Lake James.

This land of "Smiling Waters" received more than her share of recreation facil- ities. All sorts of sports may be enjoyed here, boating, swimming, hiking, surf board riding, dancing, horseback riding, tennis, baseball, boat racing, sail boating. canoe- ing, woodcraft-in fact you may follow your own hobby of sport, and play golf on a very sporty course.

The Lake James Directory is made possible by the business men whose ads appear herein. We suggest you call around and visit them when in need of their services. They are worthy of your support.

OF HISTORICAL INTEREST

Chief Pokagon, the last chief of the Potawatomi Indians, who roamed, fished and hunted this region, long before the white man, and for whom they named Poka- gon State Park, once called this region. "The Land of Smiling Waters," and it would be impossible to find a more suitable name. You may feel the thrill of gliding through the clean, clear and cool water in a canoe as you explore the many channels that join and make many lakes accessible to small craft without portage, see the fish dart back under the lily pads that line each side of the channel, making a picture that will linger forever in your memory. You will enjoy telling over and over about your vacation in Steuben County.

It is easy for you to catch a supply of pan fish most any time, such as bluegill, perch, rock bass and many other varieties. For the more expert fisherman, pike and pickerel, tipping the scale at 24 pounds, and large mouth bass. The king of the fish family-the small mouth bass, has been taken from these waters weighing 6 3/4 pounds. Through the efforts of the Indiana Conservation Department and the local clubs the abundant supply of fish is permanently assured. All kinds of vacation sports are available in the "Land of Smiling Waters." Sail boating is very popular. Horseback riding, hiking, tennis, golf on a very sporty course, surf board riding be- hind fast motor boats, can be included in your vacation, and as the spray of clean, cool water brushes your cheek, a feeling of joy and happiness comes to you that makes you glad you are one of thousands who spent their vacation in Steuben County.

Modern hotels, cottages, rooms and camp sites, at very reasonable rates are to be found here. The vacationist need never be far from good accommodations, and food is the best.

Lake James, Crooked Lake, Lake Gage, George Lake, Clear Lake or Hamilton Lake make ideal spots for vacations.

Pokagon State Park, on the shores of Lake James, contains a thousand acres of natural beauty unspoiled by the axe. Standing on a hilltop in this park a sense of peace and happiness comes to you, and a realization of the endless homage we owe to the men who had the vision of wonderful possibilities and made that vision come true for you and me to enjoy. Now through the efforts of the Conservation Depart- ment of Indiana we can rest assured that we will have the best in vacation facilities.

In Pokagon State Park you will find a large, modern finely constructed hotel open all year, also a boys' camp which offers wood-craft and all outdoor sports which played such a big part in the lives of Kit Carson, Daniel Boone, Buffalo Bill and many others of our boyhood heroes. You will find a vacation for your boy now at Pokagon State Park will do much in the making of the real men of tomorrow. A large shelter house with massive fireplaces and outdoor stoves are here for you to use. Trailer space and camp sites are available in the park. You will see buffalo, deer and elk, interesting to the children as well as the adults. There is an excellent bathing beach at Pokagon State Park and a riding stable with good horses.
