DREHER'S SIMPLEX
STREET AND HOUSE NUMBER
GUIDE SYSTEM OF INDIANAPOLIS
EXPLANATION
DARK-FACED TYPE IN STREET GUIDE
Streets are arranged alphabetically on left side of pages 34 to 130 and indexed to fourth letter at top of each page; also, indexed to Dreher's Map of Indianapolis by numbers in par- entheses following each street name (see map for explana- tion). Official description of each street is then given and finally a reference as to distance and direction from some prominent street for drivers' or automobilists' use.
LIGHT-FACED TYPE IN STREET GUIDE
The numbering of each street is given in left-hand column from the beginning to the end of said street. This number column is so arranged that the street car service for each residence or street number can be ascertained by placing the housenumber wanted on the proper number line and then reading that line across the page, in which you will find the car, or cars, to be taken (in second column), where to get off the car (in third column), and the direction or number of streets to walk from the car line (in fourth column).
NOTE .- Get off at "same number on (car line street) " is an universal phrase used in the third column in case of parallel streets with the car line; meaning that one should get off the car at the cross street, the inter- secting number of which is nearest to the number wanted on the parallel street. To find name of this cross street, turn to said car line in Street Car Routes and look in left-hand num- ber column for parallel number.
Walk "e (500) w" (e. g. Abbott st), is an universal style of phrase for cross streets used in the fourth column; meaning that the car line crosses the cross street at this number. All lesser house-numbers will be found in the direction given to the left of the parenthesis ; and, all higher housenumbers will be found in direction given to the right.
To go to the intersection of any two streets where no house number is given, find the intersecting number of either street (shown in dark-faced type description of said street where it begins) and that number will prove to be the house number, approximately, of the other street at that Intersection.
For example-Orange and Spruce streets. Turn to Orange street, and the intersecting number of cross streets at Orange is 1302. Then turn to Spruce street and place 1302 on the third number line (930 to 1400) and read the result on that line. Or, take the intersecting number of Spruce street at cross streets (viz., 1502) and turn to Orange street and place 1502 on the second number line (1330 to 2200) and the same result will be obtained on that line as was found in the third number line of Spruce street.
STREET CAR ROUTES
of all city car lines will be found on pages 10 to 33.
Schedule of morning, night and owl cars, are given from Illinois and Washington and end of each line.
The house numbering at each intersection is shown, the numbering of the car line street being given in left-hand

number column and the numbering of the cross streets is given in right-hand number column or at top of each para- graph of cross streets.
The prefixes L or R, given on left side of number column, shows that said street is open to left or right only from the car line.
OWL CAR SERVICE
is given on the following lines. Schedules are shown in each individual car route.
BLAKE and E WASHINGTON line.
BRIGHTWOOD and ILLINOIS line.
COLLEGE and S MERIDIAN line.
EAST 10TH and N'WESTERN line.
PENNSYLVANIA and W INDIANAPOLIS line. PROSPECT and W MICHIGAN line.
HOUSE NUMBER SYSTEM OF INDIANAPOLIS
THE BASE LINES-Two streets, Washington running east and west from the center of the city (one square south of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument) to the city limits, and Meridian, running north and south from the intersection at Washington street to the city limits, are used as base lines from which the num- bering of all streets are calculated.
THE NUMBER LINES-From these base lines number lines designated by hundreds are assigned to certain parallel streets that generally intersect the base line.
THE NUMBERING OF SQUARES-East and west streets are numbered by squares 0, 100, 200, etc., from Meridian east and 0, 100, 200, etc., from Meridian west. North and south streets are numbered in the same manner from Washington north and south. Streets not beginning at the base line but further out (as Hall place, starting at East Sixteenth street, 1600 number line, and running north), the numbering begins in that hundred designated by the number line for all parallel streets.
THE NUMBERING OF A SQUARE The rule for as- signing numbers is based on lot frontage. A num- ber is given for each twenty feet frontage or frac- tional part thereof. Thus, when a lot is 25 feet or 33 feet or 40 feet wide, two numbers are assigned. When over 40 feet and up to 60 feet wide, three numbers are assigned. When property fronts on north or west side of streets, even numbers are as- signed from each hundred, beginning with 2. When property fronts on the south or east side of streets, odd numbers are assigned in the same manner, be- ginning with 1. Thus numbers are assigned in that hundred until all lots between the two number lines are numbered, then the next hundred begins. Indiana, Massachusetts, Virginia and Kentucky ave- nues are numbered as north and south streets.
NOTICE :- The Street Guide and Map of Indianapolis here- in published have been compiled from official records, and is arranged in accordance with Dreher's Simplex Street and Housenumber Guide and Mile Square Index System for mu- nicipalities.
