The City of Elkhart, with its population of 12,000 is the most important manufacturing city of its size in Indiana. It is situated on the Elkhart and St. Joseph Rivers and the L. S. & M. S. and C. W. & M. Rys., 10 miles n e of Goshen Court House. Elkhart is lighted by gas and electric light, has one of the best water works systems in the State, has well graded and cleanly kept streets. The best Opera House in Northern Indi- ana, two first-class Hotels and several minor ones, substantial business blocks, palatial residences and neatly kept cottages and grounds, has a good fire department and ample police protec- . tion, has paved streets and miles of cement walks. It has also two fine parks and miles of beautiful drives. It has one of the finest bands of music in the west and an excellent orchestra, three banks, one cemetery, graded and high school. Its news- papers are the Daily Truth and Daily Evening Review. The Mennonite Publishing Co. issue from their establishment five religious papers, and C. G. Conn edits the Monthly Truth. . There is no point in the State that can excel Elkhart in the inducements it can offer to manufacturers-abundant water power, excellent railroad facilities and low rate of taxation.
