INTRODUCTORY
The 1912 edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Elkhart City Directory is herewith presented.
This book alone may be relied upon to tell "who is who" in Elkhart for it gives the full list of Elkhart's citi- `zens and the vital facts concerning them. In addition, the value of the Directory as a book of reference and a guide to the streets and avenues, churches, schools, public buildings,, banks, societies, organizations, in fact all the institutions of the city has always been appreciated by those who have made themselves familiar with its con- tents and understand the numerous uses to which it can be put.
The General Index to information contained in the Directory will be found following this introductory.
POPULATION.
The Directory contains 8,698 individual names. Using the multiple of 212 to allow for names of women and children not included in the canvass, we estimate the population at 21,745.

The Telephone System is so cheap and extensive that its use is all but universal.
The Indiana & Michigan Power Company supplies light and power second to none in the country in both quality and price.
The Repair Shops and the end of four divisions of the L. S. & M. S. Ry. are located here, as well as their enormous gravity switch yards and round houses, caus- ing an annual payroll of more than a million dollars from this company alone.
Elkhart is located on the St Joseph river at the junc- tion of two other clear, spring-fed streams, the Elkhart and Christiana. Within a radius of 5 to 8 miles are a half dozen beautiful lakes affording great opportunity for fishing, boating, bathing and outing in general.
Elkhart is in the field for more first class factories. To such free sites are available. These sites have all utilities, such as water, gas, sewerage, electricity, side- walks, paved streets, street cars and railroad switches. Elkhart also offers cheap power, Ideal labor conditions and model home life.
A copy of this Directory will be placed in each of the Directory Libraries of the leading cities of both the United States and Canada for the free use of those seek- ing information regarding Elkhart and its business inter- ests. The advantage of this widespread publicity is obvious, for there is nothing that contributes more to the development of a community than a clear exploitation of its advantages and resources as only the Directory can show.
