There is a Federal Tax on all Long Distance calls. Rates Shown are Subject to Change upon Approval of the Appropriate Regulatory Authorities.
LONG DISTANCE SERVICE
LONG DISTANCE SERVICE
Long Distance calls are calls to points beyond the exchange area for which a toll charge is made. They are classified as "Station-to-Station" or "Person-to-Person" and the rates are classified as "Day" or "Night and Sunday." The classes of calls are briefly described here.
STATION-TO-STATION CALLS
A station-to-station call is one on which you will talk with any- one who answers the telephone in the distant place.
The charge for a station-to-station call begins when the called telephone or private switchboard answers.
To place a station-to-station call, give the operator-
FIRST -The name of the distant place.
SECOND-The telephone number desired (if known), otherwise, the name and address of the telephone desired. For example: Any one at John Doe's Residence, 425 Main Street.
THIRD -Your own number when the operator asks for it.
PERSON-TO-PERSON CALLS
A person-to-person call is one on which you wish to talk with a particular person; or with a particular department reached through a private switchboard; or with a hotel room.
The charge is slightly more than on a station-to-station call and begins when you reach the person, extension telephone or department desired.
To place a person-to-person call, give the operator-
FIRST
-The name of the distant place. .
SECOND-The person or department desired and also the tele- phone number and extension number if you know them. If you do not know the telephone number, give name and address under which it is listed. For ex- ample: Mr. John Doe at his residence or Mr. John Doe at Read's Department Store, 425 Main Street.
THIRD
-Your own telephone number when the operator asks for it.
COLLECT CALLS
If you wish the charges on the call you are placing to be paid at the distant telephone, tell the operator when giving the call that it is a "collect" call. The charges, if accepted at the distant tele- phone, will be billed to that telephone.
OVERSEAS TELEPHONE SERVICE
From your telephone you may call certain foreign countries and a number of ships at sea. Complete information and rates may be obtained and calls/may be placed by calling "Long Distance.'

DIAL SERVICE SUGGESTIONS
HOW TO DIAL
SUPPOSE YOU WANT TO DIAL 2-3269
1. Remove receiver and listen for dial tone-a "humm-m-m-ing" sound.
2. Place finger in opening where you see the figure "2".
3. Pull dial around until finger strikes the finger stop. Remove finger from opening and let dial return to normal. Do not force dial as it returns to nor- mal position.
4. Proceed in the same way to dial the figure "3," then the figures 2, 6, 9, in the order in which they appear.
Either the ringing or the busy signal should be heard soon after the dialing is completed. The ringing signal is an in- termittent "burr-burr-rring" sound that indicates the called telephone is being rung. The busy signal is a fast "buzz- buzz-buzz" which indicates the called line is busy.
If you make a mistake in dialing, re- place the receiver for a few seconds and dial the complete number again. Don't hurry-take time to dial correctly.
Party line subscribers should always listen before dialing to make certain the line is not in use.

HELPFUL INFORMATION
PARTY-LINE COURTESY PAYS
If you are on a party line, remember that consideration among those on the line will be appreciated by all.
These suggestions will help you obtain the best service:
Listen for a moment to make sure the line is clear before you dial, so you won't interrupt a neighbor's call. Replace the receiver quietly if the line is in use. Keep calls to a reasonable length, and avoid consecutive calls when it is evident that others are waiting.
"GADGETS" MAY HARM SERVICE
In the interest of good service, please avoid the use of "gadgets." They are , more likely to interfere with telephone service than improve it, and the Com- pany must reserve the right to remove any unauthorized equipment or devices in the interest of maintaining good serv- ice.
THE CLASSIFIED
DIRECTORY
The classified section of the Telephone Directory lists business firms under head- ings descriptive of the business, the com- modity sold, or the service rendered.
.
IDENTIFICATION OF EMPLOYEES
Employees whose duties require ad- mittance to subscriber's premises to in- spect, repair, or remove the Company's apparatus or facilities are provided with a photographic identification card. This card shows the employee's name, signature, and his photograph, and is countersigned by a department man- ager. Subscribers are earnestly re- quested to refuse admittance to their premises, for telephone purposes, to any
one who cannot furnish this means of of service, directory listings, extension identification.
GIVE THE CALLED PERSON TIME TO ANSWER
The person you are calling may be unable to reach the telephone quickly. If you allow plenty of time for answering, it may save making another call. Wait at least ten rings-one minute-before you decide no one is there.
.
YOU MAY SEND TELEGRAMS BY TELEPHONE
You may send telegrams, cablegrams, or radiograms over the telephone by calling the Western Union Telegraph Company. The charges will appear on your telephone bill. You may also tele- phone such messages from public tele- phones by dialing "0" (operator) and ask- ing for "Western Union." The operator will collect the charges.
.
HOW TO AVOID WRONG NUMBERS
If you are not sure of the number you wish to call, please look in the directory. Make a list of frequently-called numbers and keep it up to date. Depend on your memory only for those numbers called regularly and of which you are certain. Make a note of numbers furnished by "Information" on the page facing the in- side back cover of this directory.
.
BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS
All matters relating to new telephone service, changes of address, terminations
telephones, private branch exchanges, intercommunicating systems, collections, adjustments, etc., are the responsibility of a Service Representative in our busi- ness office, located at 133 North West Fifth Street, telephone 5-5191. Whether you call by telephone or in person you will find her anxious to help you with any questions you may have about your bill or your service.
ALWAYS WAIT FOR THE DIAL TONE
When you lift the receiver on a dial telephone, you should soon hear a steady humming sound-hum-m-m-the dial tone, which indicates that the equipment is ready to handle your call. If you do not hear the dial tone after a reasonable period, hang up for a few minutes and then try again. If you start to dial before you hear the dial tone, you may get a wrong number.
SPEAK IN A NORMAL VOICE
You can be heard most distinctly if you talk directly into the mouthpiece and speak in a normal tone of voice.
PLEASE DON'T CALL "INFORMATION" NEEDLESSLY
Three out of five calls to "Information" are for numbers that are listed in the telephone directory. If you are in any way doubtful concerning the number you wish to call, please check your own directory or personal number list first. If you are unable to find the number, dial 113 and an operator will help you. Make a note on the page facing the in- side back cover of this directory of num- bers furnished by "Information" for fu- ture reference.

CONCERNING BILL PAYMENTS
Telephone bills are issued once a month and may be paid by mail, or in person at our business office. Payments may also be made after business office hours, on Sundays and on Holidays in a depository located at the Business Office.
·
"BEEP" TONE TELLS WHEN TELEPHONE CONVERSATION IS BEING RECORDED
A short high "beep" tone heard on the telephone line about every 15 seconds means that the person with whom you are talking is recording your conversation by means of his electrical recording machine connected to the telephone line.
This signal is provided by the tele- phone company for your protection. If you do not want a record made of what you are saying, ask the person with whom you are talking to disconnect the record- ing machine. When he disconnects his recorder the signal is no longer heard.
The "beep" is produced automatically by the device used to connect the re-
corder to the telephone line. It stops when the recorder is disconnected. Use of a recorder without this signal is un- lawful.
.

While every effort is made to attain absolute accuracy in this directory, errors or omissions, for which the Company as- sumes no liability, sometimes occur. · BE CERTAIN TO HANG UP CAREFULLY
"Banging" the telephone when you hang up may give the person at the other end an unpleasant bang in the ear. It may also cause the telephone to go out of order.

Public coin telephones are provided at many locations for your convenience when away from your home or business telephone.
If you receive a wrong number, or coins are collected in error, please notify the operator promptly so that proper adjustment may be arranged.
