PREFACE.
3596
' The SECOND ISSUE of WILLIAM'S FORT WAYNE DIRECTORY is pre- sented to the public with the belief that it will be found as correct and reliable as any publication of the kind in the country. Our aim has been to make it a useful Book of Reference, and such that those who have once consulted its pages would be constrained to resort to it in their daily business transactions, to obtain the facilities it afford- ed. How far we have succeeded in our undertaking the public will determine from the practical tests to which the work will be sub- mitted by them, and to that ordeal we cheerfully submit it, and con- fidently anticipate a favorable decision.
The present volume will be found to contain about three thousand and two hundred names of citizens, whose locations could be fixed, and upon this basis, experience gained in other cities, would justify us in estimating the present population of the CITY or FORT WAYNE at fourteen thousand five hundred souls, which fact indicates the growth and commercial importance of the city.
The work embraces a General Directory, containing a full list of the names and locations of the inhabitants of the City ; a complet . Business Directory, embracing the name of each person and firm doing business in FORT WAYNE ; with a City Guide, containing the names of all Streets, Avennes and Alleys, .with their location and termini ; also the names and locations of all the Public Institutions, Churches, Societies, etc., and a complete List of the Post Offices in the United States and Territories.
To our Agent, Mr. H. THORNTON BENNETT, (who has for the last six years assisted in the publication of the Cincinnati Directory, and whose qualifications for the undertaking are unsurpassed by any one in the business, ) belongs the credit of collecting, and preparing for the press the materials of this work, and we cheerfully accord the merit of it to him.
We return our thanks to the Press of the City for their flattering no- tices during the canvass, and also to the business men and citizens for their support of the work ; and sincerely hope that the Directory will be found, not only a useful auxilliary in the transaction of busi- ness, but that it may contribute somewhat to the growth of the beau- tiful City of Fort Wayne.
