PREFACE.

In submitting this volume of the Fort Wayne Directory to their patrons and the public in general, the publishers do so feeling that they have complied, in good faith, with their promise to furnish a reliable Directory of the residents and business interests of your growing city. It is not claimed, however, that this volume is free from errors, and it is impos- sible to prevent some from occurring even among the names of prominent business men. In gathering the names in the more illiterate sections of the city, owing to the different na- tionalities, it is impossible, at times, for the canvasser to get intelligent information, and the cases are not a few where he must use his own judgment in spelling the names.

In looking into a Directory for a name, remember the fact that there are a variety of ways for spelling the most simple names, and observe these varieties before you condemn the compiler. For example, the name of Smith is spelled Smith, Smyth, Smythe, Schmidt, Schmit, Schmitt, Schmid, etc .; and the name of Snyder may be spelled Snyder, Schneider, Sni- der, Schnieder, Sneider, Snieder, etc., etc. Other names vary in the same manner.

An accurate compilation of this work makes an exhibit of 9,154 names, and with Four as a multiple, (the lowest multiple used by any publisher in the United States) gives us a pop- ulation of 36,616.

Hoping this work will give entire satisfaction,

We remain, Very Respectfully,

THE PUBLISHERS.
