PREFACE.
The publishers in presenting their fourth edition of the City Directory have endeavored, by every possible means, to make it an improvement on any of their former works. With added experience in this line of publication, and having employed on the work only such as were thor- oughly competent to make it a success, they feel that they can offer it to the public with confidence in its accuracy and completeness. The Directory for 1878 contains 9,825 names, which, according to our method of computing populations, would give the city 32,750 inhabitants, an increase of 1,570 over 1877. This showing is rather gratifying, when we take into consideration the general depression of business throughout the country, which has caused so many removals from less favored places. Fort Wayne, while she has held her own in this respect, has furnished employment for many who were compelled to leave other places. A comparison of the names contained in the Directory from year to year, shows fewer changes in proportion to the number of inhabitants in Fort Wayne than in many other cities. While thanking the business commu- nity for the generous patronage given us, we desire to express our inten- tion of issuing the Fort Wayne Directory regularly, with the promise that it shall be as complete as it is possible to make it.
Very respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO.
